Product Overview

Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) was developed based on MEM medium. Compared with MEM medium, the content of amino acids increased by 2 times, vitamins increased by 4 times, and non essential amino acids, trace iron ions, and sodium pyruvate were also added. The DMEM medium was initially designed with a glucose content of 1000mg/L (low sugar type), and later developed with a glucose content of 4500mg/L (high sugar type), which has been widely used in the cultivation of various cells.

DMEM high sugar medium is widely used in the culture of fast growing and low adhesion cells, hybridoma myeloma cells, clone cells, DNA transfected transformation cells, various primary virus host cells, single cells and vaccine production, such as the use of CHO cells to express EPO and produce hepatitis B vaccine.

Phenol red is used as a pH indicator in the culture medium to continuously monitor the acidity and alkalinity of the culture medium. At low pH values, phenol red makes the culture medium yellow, while at higher pH values, it makes the culture medium purple. At pH values of 7.2-7.4, it is red and suitable for cell culture. However, phenol red also has some drawbacks. Studies have shown that phenol red can mimic the effects of steroid hormones (especially estrogen). Therefore, when using estrogen sensitive cells (such as breast tissue), it is best to use a culture medium that does not contain phenol red. Phenol red can interfere with the detection during flow cytometry analysis. In addition, the presence of phenol red in some serum-free culture medium formulations can interfere with sodium potassium balance.

This product contains various components such as amino acids, vitamins, and inorganic salts required for cell culture, but does not contain proteins, lipids, or any growth factors. Therefore, the product needs to be used with serum or serum-free additives.
