Leica Microsystems invests $60 million to open a new generation factory in Singapore to meet the growing global demand for GD microscope technology

The expanded factory will provide innovative surgical microscopes and double Leica Microsystems' microscope production for global surgical and industrial applications.

On October 17, 2023, Leica Microsystems ("Leica"), a global LDZ in the field of microscopes and scientific instruments, announced the official opening of its $60 million (SGD 82 million) medical manufacturing and research and development facility in Singapore. As one of Leica's four major global production bases, Singapore is fully responsible for producing and exporting surgical microscopes to the global market, currently accounting for 40% of the company's total revenue. The new factory will centralize product development and manufacturing under one roof, expected to double the global production of surgical microscopes for international exports. In addition to surgical microscopes, the factory will also produce microscopes for industrial applications.

The new next-generation manufacturing factory has obtained the Platinum Green Building Mark certification and is equipped with ZXJ's digital technology, which can achieve high automation and improve productivity. In addition, Leica will expand its teams in research and development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, and product management, increasing its existing workforce to over 500 people.

The new factory is an extension of our footprint and commitment in Singapore, built upon our fifty year history since establishing DYJ business here in 1971. We are pleased to move into an expanded factory that will combine advanced manufacturing and product innovation capabilities to develop next-generation digital healthcare solutions, such as surgical microscopes that support artificial intelligence, "said Dr. Annette Rinck, President of Leica Microsystems.

Leica continues to push the boundaries of advanced microsurgery, enabling our customers to create a healthier world. We believe that Singapore is an ideal hub for business, innovation, and technology, with a pool of high-tech talent. We are doubling the size of our R&D and product management teams, which will enable us to advance our JD instruments globally.

Surgical microscope is a tool of BKHQ in the operating room. With the increasing demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures such as brain, spinal cord, or ophthalmic surgeries, it is expected that the global surgical microscope market will grow by+14% (compound annual growth rate) in the next decade (1). The advancement of surgical microscopes enables surgeons to perform surgeries with higher precision and speed, which can translate into better patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays, and fewer waiting lists (2).

We are investing in the development of highly innovative digital solutions that can not only have a positive impact on patient treatment outcomes, but also have a broader impact on the healthcare system, "Rinck said. We are committed to collaborating with universities, hospitals, health departments, and regional accreditation bodies to advance clinical research and development, creating value for patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems in Singapore and globally
