West Nile fever is a zoonotic disease caused by West Nile virus (WNV) infection, mainly infecting birds, humans, and mammals such as horses and cows.

The clinical symptoms of horses mainly manifest as viral encephalitis or encephalomyelitis. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has listed it as a legally reported animal disease, and in China it is an imported animal disease.

The susceptible animals of this disease mainly include humans and horses, wild birds are the natural hosts of the disease, and mosquitoes are the main vector of transmission. The virus exists in nature through the biological transmission chain of "birds, mosquitoes, birds, humans, and other animals". After mosquitoes bite infected birds, the virus proliferates in the mosquito's body, and the infected mosquitoes then bite horses, leading to horse infection. Humans and horses are considered the ultimate hosts of WNV.

Birds are the storage hosts of the virus, while humans are mainly infected through mosquito bites carrying the virus. Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms, and about 20% may mainly present with West Nile fever and West Nile virus encephalitis. In recent years, the epidemic area of this disease has gradually expanded, causing outbreaks in North America, Europe, Africa and other places. China has not yet discovered diseases caused by West Nile virus infection, nor has it isolated West Nile virus. However, with the increasing frequency of international exchanges, it also faces the threat of the disease's importation.

Kernel Laboratory in the United States has developed a kit for detecting IgM antibodies against West Nile fever in horse serum, which can be used for IgM antibody detection of horses infected with West Nile fever. There is no cross reactivity with Japanese encephalitis antibodies.
