Akabane disease, also known as Akabane disease, is a viral infectious disease in cattle and sheep characterized by miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, fetal malformation, mummification, and joint curvature hydrocephalus syndrome (AH syndrome) in newborns.

The pathogen of this disease, Akabane virus, is a member of the Bunyaviridae family and Simbu virus group. The virus particles are spherical in shape and have a capsule. The virus contains single stranded RNA and four types of proteins, G1，、G2、N、L。

Pregnant cows, sheep, and goats are most susceptible to this disease, and fetuses during the perinatal period are often infected. The virus is mainly transmitted by blood sucking insects, so this disease has obvious seasonality. There is experimental evidence that when this disease virus is inoculated into the chest cavity of Culicoides, the virus can replicate in its body and last for at least 9 days.
