Ion exchange technology has a long history, and certain natural substances such as zeolite and sulfonated coal made from coal can be used as ion exchangers.
(1) Strong acidic cationic resin
This type of resin contains a large number of strong acidic groups, such as sulfo-sO3H, which are easily dissociated into H+in solution, thus exhibiting strong acidity. After resin dissociation, the negatively charged groups contained in the body, such as SO3-, can adsorb and bind other cations in the solution. These two reactions exchange H+in the resin with cations in the solution. Strong acidic resins have strong dissociation ability and can dissociate and undergo ion exchange in acidic or alkaline solutions.
After a period of use, the resin needs to undergo regeneration treatment, which involves using chemicals to reverse the ion exchange reaction and restore the functional groups of the resin to their original state for reuse. The above-mentioned cationic resin is regenerated with strong acid, during which the resin releases adsorbed cations, which then combine with H+to restore its original composition.
(2) Weakly acidic cationic resin
This type of resin contains weak acidic groups, such as carboxyl COOH, which can dissociate H+in water and become acidic. The remaining negatively charged groups after resin dissociation, such as R-COO - (where R is a hydrocarbon group), can adsorb and bind with other cations in the solution, resulting in cation exchange. This type of resin has weak acidity, meaning it is difficult to dissociate and undergo ion exchange at low pH, and can only function in alkaline, neutral, or slightly acidic solutions (such as pH 5-14). This type of resin is also regenerated using acid (which is easier to regenerate than strongly acidic resins).
(3) Strong alkaline anion resin
This type of resin contains strong alkaline groups, such as quaternary amine (also known as quaternary amine) - NR3OH (R is a hydrocarbon group), which can dissociate into OH - in water and exhibit strong alkalinity. The positively charged groups of this resin can adsorb and bind with anions in the solution, resulting in anion exchange.
This resin has strong dissociation properties and can work normally at different pH. It is regenerated using strong alkali (such as NaOH).
(4) Weakly alkaline anion resin
This type of resin contains weakly basic functional groups, such as primary amine (also known as primary amine) - NH2, secondary amine (secondary amine) - NHR, or tertiary amine (tertiary amine) - NR2, which can dissociate into OH - in water and exhibit weak alkalinity. The positively charged groups of this resin can adsorb and bind with anions in the solution, resulting in anion exchange. In most cases, this resin adsorbs all other acid molecules in the solution. It can only work under neutral or acidic conditions (such as pH 1-9). It can be regenerated using Na2CO3 and NH4OH.

In addition to the styrene and acrylic series mentioned above, ion exchange resins can also be made by polymerizing other organic monomers. Such as phenolic (FP), epoxy (EPA), vinyl pyridine (VP), urea formaldehyde (UA), etc.
7. Varieties of ion exchange resins
There are many manufacturers and varieties of ion exchange resins both domestically and internationally. There are dozens of domestic manufacturing factories, mainly including Shanghai Resin Factory, Tianjin Bohong Resin Technology Co., Ltd., Chenguang Chemical Research Institute Resin Factory, Tianjin Nanda Resin Technology Co., Ltd., etc; Famous foreign brands include the Amberlite series produced by Rohm&Hass in the United States, the Dowex series from Dow Chemical Company, the Duolite and Asmit series from France, the Diaion series from Japan, as well as the Ionac and Allassion series. The grade of resin is mostly determined by each manufacturer or the country where it is located. Some foreign products use the letter C to represent cationic resin (C is the first letter of cation) and A to represent anionic resin (A is the first letter of Anion). For example, Amberlite's IRC and IRA represent cationic resin and anionic resin, respectively. According to the regulations of the Ministry of Chemical Industry of China (HG2-884-76), the model of ion exchange resin consists of three Arabic numerals. The numbers represent the classification of products: 0 represents strong acidity, 1 represents weak acidity, 2 represents strong alkalinity, 3 represents weak alkalinity, 4 represents chelation, 5 represents amphoteric, and 6 represents redox. The second digit represents different skeletal structures: 0 represents styrene, 1 represents acrylic, 2 represents phenolic, 3 represents epoxy, etc. The third digit is a sequence number used to distinguish differences in the matrix, crosslinking group, etc. In addition, the letter D is added before the number in the macroporous resin.
