Product Description:

PACS-3 is a certified reference material (CRM) for marine sediments issued by the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada, used to determine total metal content and extractable metal content. One unit of PACS-3 is composed of approximately 50 grams of marine sediment. This material is used for calibrating programs and developing methods to determine trace metals and matrix components in marine sediments and materials with similar matrices.

The following table shows the components for which authentication, reference, and information values have been established for this RM. The extended uncertainty (UceM) in the authentication value is equal to U=kuc, where U is the combined standard uncertainty calculated according to the JCGM guidelines [], and k is the coverage factor. Two (2) coverage factors were applied, equivalent to a confidence level of approximately 95%. UcRM aims to consider various aspects that reasonably lead to measurement uncertainty. All listed values are based on dry mass.


Expected use:

This reference material is mainly used for calibrating programs and developing methods to determine trace and matrix components of total metal content and extractable metal content in marine sediments and materials with similar matrices. The recommended minimum sample mass is 250mg.


Storage and usage instructions:

Storage and Sampling:

It is recommended to store the materials in a cool and clean place. Each bottle is packaged in a three-layer foil bag as an impermeable barrier to mercury vapor. In environments with high levels of mercury vapor, mercury can penetrate the plastic caps of bottles, potentially contaminating the contents inside. Before use, the contents of the bottle should be thoroughly mixed by rotating and shaking, and immediately closed tightly after use. The certification value is based on a sub sample of at least 250 milligrams in the bottle. To ensure the stability of the butyl tin compound in PACS-3, it is necessary to store the material at a temperature of 4+° C or lower.

Preparation of materials:

PACS-3 was collected from Esquimalt Port in British Columbia. All of these have undergone freeze-drying, screening, and are mixed and bottled by research institute staff using facilities at the Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology in Ottawa through a 120 grit (125 micron) sieve. After bottling, the samples were subjected to radiation sterilization at a dose as low as 25 kGy by Nordion Gamma Center (QC Laval, Canada) to minimize the impact of biological activity.
