The S201 fiber optic detection mirror can provide high-quality and low distortion imaging of the fiber end and surrounding cores. This microscope has a high-intensity illumination system and a magnification of 200X, which is sufficient to provide clear images of the fiber core and surrounding cladding. FS201 provides coaxial and tilted lighting settings. The coaxial setting provides symmetrical light for high detail inspection, while the tilted setting provides light at a centrifugal angle relative to the surface to achieve higher contrast. FS201 should not be used to detect optical fibers connected to active light sources; Before testing, the light source must be disconnected or turned off.

FS201 not only includes FS201-FC adapter for fiber optic FC/ST/SC ends (Ø 2.5 mm plug), but also FS201-SMA adapter for fiber optic SMA905 and SMA906 ends (Ø 3 mm plug). Below are separate FS200-LC adapters for LC end fiber (Ø 1.25mm plug) and FS201-PM adapters for polarization maintaining fiber.

Operate the fiber optic inspection mirror
Insert the fiber optic connector into the adapter until it can no longer be inserted, and firmly fix the position during testing. To turn on the lighting, please toggle the switch at the bottom of the detection mirror; '|' activates coaxial lighting, while '| |' activates oblique lighting. After completing the task, turn the switch back to 'O' and turn off the detection mirror.

To detect the complete surface area of large core fibers or angled end fibers, it may be necessary to rotate the fiber optic joint. This method can also be used to distinguish contaminants between the fiber optic joint end face and the detection mirror element itself. To view the entire field of view, the rubber eyepiece should be placed as close as possible to the operator's eyes. Operators who are accustomed to wearing glasses should remove them in order to more comprehensively inspect the fiber optic cables. Please note that under normal operation, the focus adjustment knob should not be rotated to the limit position. Long term repetition of this practice may lead to instrument malfunction.

FS201 should not be used for observing active emitting optical fibers. Although the laser protected attenuation filter in FS201 reduces the risk of accidentally observing active fiber emission. However, due to the commonly used infrared wavelength in fiber optic devices, it suppresses the natural reverse reflection of bright light and may lead to unexpected exposure time extension. Therefore, Thorlabs suggests that the light source must be disconnected from the jumper or turned off before testing.
