Overview

CST test

Due to the extremely low matrix permeability in natural gas shale, core permeability testing cannot be conducted. The capillary water absorption time (CST) test is used as a method to evaluate the fluid sensitivity of granular samples (such as rock debris), and the ratio of the CST response of fresh water to the response of 7% KCl is used to demonstrate the observed results through random sampling.

In the test, 5 grams of -70 mesh material were placed in 50 milliliters of test solution and stirred with a magnetic stirrer for 2 hours, followed by CST testing. Extract 5 milliliters of slurry with a syringe and place it in a cylindrical funnel on porous filter paper. When the advancing fluid reaches the first sensor, the timer starts counting, and when the fluid reaches the outer sensor, the timer stops counting. Record CST time in seconds and calculate CST ratio by subtracting blank time (fluid only) from sample time and dividing by blank time. Repeat the test three times and take the average. This type of test is often used in the evaluation and characterization of sludge.

Single loop test probe

Multi ring and multi radius testing probe

By using standard funnels and multi ring multi radius testing probes, it can be concluded that there is a linear relationship between the specific filtration resistance of different types of sludge over a wide range. When using a multi ring test probe, the tester automatically divides the time based on the number of electrodes. Due to the parabolic relationship between time and filtered liquid volume in the filtration process, the difference in readings is constant (for different filter papers) and directly proportional to the filtration resistance.
