Stable control of sizing concentration is a prerequisite for achieving quality consistency in carbon fiber production. However, the current industry situation is that there is a lack of online real-time monitoring methods, and most enterprises still use the extensive method of periodically adding sizing agents to maintain concentration stability. The operator needs to take samples on site and send them to the laboratory for testing, and the entire process from sampling to issuing results usually takes several hours. Although traditional laboratory methods have guaranteed accuracy, their lag problem is very prominent. When concentration data is fed back to the production site, the production line may have been running for several hours in a state that deviates from process requirements, resulting in quality fluctuations and raw material losses that should not be underestimated.
From the perspective of process importance, the sizing process directly determines the final performance of carbon fiber. The coating formed by the sizing agent on the surface of the fiber plays a role in bundling the fiber and improving the processing performance. On the other hand, it can build a protective layer on the surface of the carbon fiber, effectively reducing friction damage during winding, packaging, and transportation. The deeper role is that this polymer coating has a function similar to a coupling agent, which can improve the chemical bonding strength between carbon fibers and resin matrix, enhance the interfacial properties of composite materials, and promote the infiltration efficiency of resin on fibers, thereby shortening the preparation cycle of composite materials and improving the quality of finished products. The selection of different sizing agent formulations and process parameters will have a decisive impact on the mechanical properties, processing characteristics, and final performance of carbon fibers and their composite materials.
