The purpose, principle, and process of modifying asphalt

  • Modification purpose: Add modifiers and additives into the base asphalt to fully improve the pavement performance of asphalt, including improving the temperature sensitivity, high temperature stability, low temperature cracking resistance and aging resistance of asphalt.
  • Modification principleAsphalt is a polymer mixture composed of asphaltene, resin, aromatic hydrocarbons, and saturated hydrocarbons. Asphalt is dispersed in aromatic hydrocarbons and saturated hydrocarbons through resin to form a colloidal structure. When the content of asphaltene is low, the adhesion, plasticity, and flowability of asphalt are good, but the temperature stability and elasticity are poor. Polymer modifiers are similar to asphaltene in asphalt. When added, they fully melt and swell with asphalt, adsorb aromatic hydrocarbons and resin in asphalt, and form new colloids. This not only retains or increases the adhesion, plasticity, and flowability of the original asphalt, but also improves the temperature stability and elasticity of asphalt, thereby achieving the goal of improving the road performance of asphalt.
  • Modification processUniformly and finely dispersing modifiers and additives into the base asphalt, increasing the contact area between the original asphalt and the modifier as much as possible, ensuring sufficient swelling and development, not only improving the utilization rate of the modifier but also achieving the most perfect improvement in the performance of the original asphalt.
