All ICP sensors require a constant current power supply to function properly. A typical sensing system includes an ICP sensor, a common dual conductor cable, and a basic constant current power supply. The signal conditioner includes a well regulated 18 to 30 DC power supply (battery or line power), a current regulating diode (or equivalent constant current circuit), and a capacitor for decoupling (removing bias voltage) the signal. There are several reasons for using a current regulator instead of a resistor. The dynamic resistance of a diode is very high, resulting in a source tracker gain that is very close to a single value and independent of the input voltage. Additionally, diodes can be modified to provide higher current for driving long cables. Constant current diodes should be used in ICP signal conditioners.
