For a long time, the development of various high-performance organic friction materials has been one of the hot topics in the field of composite materials research. Early organic friction materials mainly used asbestos fibers as reinforcing materials, but since asbestos was proven to be a strong carcinogenic industrial raw material in the 1980s, asbestos type friction materials have gradually faded out of the market. Nowadays, most types of braking devices use asbestos free friction materials, which can be divided into three categories based on their metal content: low metal, semi metal, and non asbestos organic (NAO). Low metal and semi metal friction materials use metal fibers instead of asbestos fibers as reinforcement materials. Currently, most road vehicles such as automobiles and motorcycles use low metal or semi metal organic friction materials to make brake pads. NAO type friction materials generally do not include metal materials, and most mining and engineering machinery equipment such as mine hoists and belt conveyors currently use this type of material to make brake shoes. In order to develop high-performance friction materials, extensive research has been conducted on the preparation processes and material formulations of various friction materials.
