Three sewage treatment plants in Nanjing will expand their production capacity this year to replenish the ecological water of rivers
On March 20th, at the site of the expansion project of Tiebei Sewage Treatment Plant, workers were tidying up the site, and it is expected that the pile foundation construction will start at the end of the month; In the Qiaobei sewage treatment plant, the expanded secondary sedimentation tank is currently being installed with equipment. This year, Nanjing has implemented expansion of three sewage treatment plants in Tiebei, Chengnan, and Qiaobei. According to relevant personnel from Nanjing Water Group, a subsidiary of Nanjing Urban Construction Group, after the completion of the project, the main urban area and Jiangbei New Area will not only be able to expand sewage storage and treatment capacity, but also achieve effluent quality better than Class A standards. The key indicators will basically reach the "quasi four types of water" standard, which can be used for ecological water replenishment of rivers and help to continuously improve the water environment in Nanjing.
On March 20th, the reporter walked into the Tiebei Sewage Treatment Plant located in Qixia District. To the west of the old plant area, across a railway, is the newly expanded plant area. The construction team is currently relocating relevant obstacles and is expected to start pile foundation construction by the end of this month. Zhou Weidong, Director of the General Engineering Office of Nanjing Water Group, introduced that in addition to expanding the Tiebei Sewage Treatment Plant, Nanjing Water Group will also start construction of the Chengnan Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion Project and complete the Qiaobei Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion Project this year.

It is reported that there are currently six sewage treatment plants in the main urban area of Nanjing (i.e. Jiangnan Six Districts), including Jiangxinzhou, Chengdong (Phase I, II, and III), Chengbei, Tiebei, Chengnan, and Xianlin, with a total treatment capacity of 1.57 million tons per day. After the completion and operation of the sewage treatment plants in Tiebei and Chengnan, the total scale of sewage treatment in the main urban area will be expanded to 1.815 million tons per day. After the expansion of the Qiaobei Sewage Treatment Plant serving Jiangbei New District, the sewage treatment capacity will be expanded from the current 100000 tons/day to 200000 tons/day.
As of the end of last year, the effluent from the sewage treatment plants in the main urban area of Nanjing has all met the national high standard for sewage discharge - Grade A standard. According to the testing, after improving the treatment process, the factory water has now exceeded Grade A, and key indicators such as ammonia nitrogen have basically reached Class IV standards for surface level. The expansion projects of three sewage treatment plants implemented this year also adopt facilities and processes such as deep bed denitrification filters to further improve the quality of the treated water. Yang Xiedong, Deputy Manager of the Expansion Project Department of Qiaobei Sewage Treatment Plant, introduced that compared with previous processes, the microorganisms attached to the sand in the deep bed denitrification filter can more effectively convert nitrate nitrogen in the sewage into nitrogen gas for volatilization, thereby significantly reducing the total nitrogen content in the effluent and reducing the risk of eutrophication pollution when discharged into the river. High standard factory water can also replenish water and inject vitality into river ecology, achieving water resource recycling
