Nanoscribe two-photon technology sets standards for 3D micro nano processing in 15 years

15 years ago, Nanoscribe was founded. As the technology Spin off of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), this young company quickly successfully released and operated the first prototype based on the principle of two-photon polymerization, and delivered the Photonic Professional system to our customers. We look back with pride and gratitude on the customers and partners who have accompanied us throughout the past 15 years, amazed by the innovation and achievements they have made using this micro nano processing technology.

As a Spin off company, Nanoscribe originated from a research group led by Professor Martin Wegener from the Institute of Applied Physics and the Institute of Nanotechnology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Professor Martin Wegener and Georg von Freymann, currently Professor of Experimental Physics and Technical Physics at Kaiserslautern University of Technology, as well as Michael Thiel, current CSO of Nanoscribe, and Martin Hermatschweiler, current CEO of Nanoscribe, co founded the company in 2007. Just one year later, Carl Zeiss Venture Beteiligungsgesellschaft invested in this startup company. In June 2021, Nanoscribe joined the BICO Group.

From two-photon absorption to high-precision 3D printing

Maria Goeppert Mayer, who once won the Nobel Prize, laid the theoretical foundation for two-photon polymerization (2PP) as early as 1931 with the assumption of two-photon absorption. And it took Theodore Maiman another thirty years to develop this laser. Two Japanese physicists, Shoji Maruo and Satoshi Kawata, subsequently demonstrated the principle of two-photon polymerization experimentally using a laser device in 1997. Just four years later, in Professor Wegener's research group, KIT launched the first two-photon polymerization laboratory device in 2001. This fundamental research ultimately laid the foundation for the commercialization of this novel micro nano processing technology.

The first nanoscale 3D printer

In 2007, Nanoscribe's first micro nano processing system paved the way for two-photon polymerization as a sub micron resolution 3D printing technology. At first, out of scientific curiosity, Nanoscribe's Photonic Professional equipment quickly developed into a standard tool for research laboratories studying micro nano processing, with 9 out of the top 10 universities in the world using Nanoscribe's equipment. At the same time, 2PP has become a key enabling technology in many application fields and continues to occupy more industrial share. With its high-precision 3D printing technology, Nanoscribe has set the industry standard for micro nano processing for 15 years.

From Pioneer to Global Market Pioneer

Nanoscribe is a pioneer in the field of high-precision 3D printing and has developed micro nano machining techniques for processing structures ranging in size from less than one micrometer to several centimeters. Currently, over one-third of the employees are engaged in research and development work, indicating that Nanoscribe is still increasing its investment in this key technology for the future. From a four person Spin off company that started in 2007 to a company with over 100 highly skilled employees, this former startup has successfully become a global player with an international perspective. Nanoscribe provides sales and technical support services to the Nanoscribe community, which now has over 3000 active users, through its branches in Germany, China, and the United States, as well as a globally certified dealer network. Based on Nanoscribe, high-precision 3D printing equipment is continuously driving cutting-edge research and industrial innovation in fields such as micro optics, integrated photonics, photon packaging, micromechanics, material development and microfluidics, as well as life sciences.
