The predecessor of Xi'an University of Aeronautics, formerly known as East China University of Aeronautics, was established in 1952 by the aviation departments of Jiaotong University (now Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Nanjing University, and Zhejiang University, and was relocated to Xi'an.
The former East China Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics was established in 1952 through the merger of the aviation engineering departments of Jiaotong University, Nanjing University (formerly Central University), and Zhejiang University during the second departmental adjustment after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Its campus is located in Nanjing. In the 1950s, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council approved the relocation of East China Aviation Institute (referred to as Huahang) to Xi'an based on the situation at that time and the needs of socialist construction. The vast number of teachers, students, and employees of China Airlines have responded to the call of the Party, obeyed the overall situation, and successfully completed the relocation task, writing a glorious page in the development of higher education in our country.
In August 1956, about 5000 faculty members, family members, and students of China Airlines, led by Dean Shou Songtao, traveled westward in batches and successfully arrived in Xi'an. They gave up the relatively comfortable life in Nanjing and rushed to the difficult conditions of the northwest without hesitation. With the spirit of "loving the motherland, considering the overall situation, working hard to start a business, and dedicating themselves to aviation", they rooted themselves in the northwest, selflessly contributed, promoted tradition, and started a new business, becoming the pioneers of the western development.
