1、 Disadvantages of ethylene oxide EO sterilization

1. Toxic and carcinogenic, flammable and explosive

EO gas itself is toxic and highly irritating, belonging to a class of carcinogens; Pure gas is prone to combustion and explosion when exposed to open flames and high temperatures, posing a high safety risk.

Long parsing time and slow shipment

After sterilization, the residual gas inside the product evaporates slowly and requires 7-14 days for routine analysis. Urgent analysis also takes more than ten hours, so it cannot be used immediately after leaving the factory.

3 Not suitable for absorbent materials

Cotton wool, gauze, paper, sponge, and wood will adsorb a large amount of EO gas, and the residue is extremely difficult to dissipate. Therefore, EO sterilization is generally not recommended.

The overall sterilization cycle is very long

Preprocessing → Vacuuming → Humidification → Medication → Insulation and Sterilization → Ventilation and Flushing → Analysis, the entire process takes a long time.

2、 Daily safety precautions for use

1. The equipment must have an independent explosion-proof workshop, explosion-proof electrical appliances, explosion-proof lamps, and static grounding. Open flames, smoking, and mobile phone open flame operations are strictly prohibited.

Operators must hold certificates, wear gas masks and protective gloves, and undergo regular medical examinations.

Store EO steel cylinders away from heat sources and direct sunlight, and store them separately in a cool and shaded warehouse.

Regularly conduct biological monitoring, residue testing, and equipment validation to meet the requirements of medical device GMP.

8. Do not sterilize food, naked pharmaceutical products, and oily items.
