Working principle of Festo cylinder

A cylinder refers to a cylindrical metal component that guides the piston to perform linear reciprocating motion inside the cylinder.Air in the engine cylinder converts thermal energy into mechanical energy through expansion;The gas is compressed by the piston in the compressor cylinder to increase the pressure.

The casing of turbines, rotary piston engines, etc. is often referred to as a "cylinder". The application fields of cylinders include printing (tension control), semiconductors (spot welding machines, chip grinding), automation control, robots, and so on.

Pneumatic actuators that convert the pressure energy of compressed gas into mechanical energy in pneumatic transmission.There are two types of cylinders: those that perform reciprocating linear motion and those that perform reciprocating oscillation.Cylinders that perform reciprocating linear motion can be divided into four types: single acting cylinders, double acting cylinders, diaphragm cylinders, and impact cylinders.

① Single acting cylinder:Only one end has a piston rod, which supplies air from one side of the piston to generate air pressure. The air pressure pushes the piston to generate thrust and extend, returning by spring or self weight.


② Double acting cylinder: alternate air supply from both sides of the piston, outputting force in one or two directions.

③ Diaphragm cylinder: Replace the piston with a diaphragm, output force in only one direction, and reset with a spring. It has good sealing performance, but short stroke.

④ Impact cylinder: This is a new type of component. It converts the pressure energy of compressed gas into the kinetic energy of high-speed piston movement (10-20 meters/second) to do work.

⑤ Rodless cylinder: a general term for cylinders without piston rods. There are two main types: magnetic cylinders and cable cylinders.

The cylinder that performs reciprocating oscillation is called an oscillating cylinder, which divides the inner cavity into two by blades and alternately supplies air to the two chambers. The output shaft performs oscillating motion with an oscillation angle less than 280 °. In addition, there are rotary cylinders, gas-liquid damping cylinders, and stepper cylinders.

1) Cylinder barrel

The inner diameter of the cylinder represents the output force of the cylinder. The piston should perform smooth reciprocating sliding inside the cylinder, and the surface roughness of the cylinder inner surface should reach Ra0.8 μ m.

2) End cap

There are intake and exhaust ports on the end cover, and some also have buffer mechanisms inside the end cover. The end cover on the rod side is equipped with a sealing ring and a dust ring to prevent air leakage from the piston rod and prevent external dust from entering the cylinder. A guide sleeve is installed on the end cover of the rod to improve the guiding accuracy of the cylinder, withstand a small amount of lateral load on the piston rod, reduce the downward bending of the piston rod when it extends, and extend the service life of the cylinder. The guide sleeve usually uses sintered oil containing alloy and forward leaning copper castings. In the past, malleable cast iron was commonly used for end caps. To reduce weight and prevent rust, aluminum alloy die-casting was often used, and brass material was used for micro cylinders.

3) Piston

The piston is a pressurized component in the cylinder. To prevent air leakage between the left and right chambers of the piston, a piston sealing ring is installed. The wear-resistant ring on the piston can improve the guidance of the cylinder, reduce the wear of the piston sealing ring, and reduce frictional resistance. Wear resistant rings are made of materials such as polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene, and synthetic resin for fabric clamping. The width of the piston is determined by the size of the sealing ring and the necessary length of the sliding part. The sliding part is too short, which can easily cause early wear and jamming. The materials commonly used for pistons are aluminum alloy and cast iron, while pistons for small cylinders are made of brass.
