The Siemens 6SL3120 module is a power module (or drive module) in the SINAMICS S120 series, widely used in industrial automation drive systems. When the module experiences a ground fault, it usually triggers alarm codes such as F30021 (power unit ground fault) or F230004 (protection action signal), causing the equipment to shut down.

Common causes of grounding faults

Poor external grounding system: loose grounding wire, corrosion, insufficient cross-sectional area, or high connection resistance.

Cable insulation aging: The insulation of motor cables or power lines is damaged, causing a short circuit between the phase line and the ground.

IGBT module breakdown: internal grounding caused by power device damage.

Environmental factors: Humidity, vibration, and temperature changes accelerate the aging of electronic components.

Insufficient fastening force: The grounding terminal was not tightened according to the standard torque, resulting in intermittent grounding abnormalities.

Diagnosis and repair recommendations

Power off and safe isolation: Ensure that the module is powered off before operation.

Check external grounding:

Use a multimeter to measure the grounding resistance, which should be less than 1 Ω.

Check if the grounding terminal is oxidized or loose, clean and re tighten if necessary (it is recommended to use a torque wrench according to the manufacturer's specifications).

Testing cables and motors:

Use a megohmmeter to test the insulation resistance of motor cables and windings to ground, and the normal value should be>1 M Ω.

Internal inspection of module (requiring professional maintenance):

Measure whether IGBT is broken down.

Check the driver board, trigger board, and current detection resistor (e.g. the resistance of 786J should be approximately 78 Ω).

Replace damaged parts: It is recommended to use original or compatible certified accessories.
