Repair of metallographic measuring microscopeIntroduction:
As a precision optical instrument, metallographic microscopes are indeed prone to various "temper tantrums" during use. According to the information I have reviewed, these faults are usually concentrated in three major areas: optical imaging, lighting systems, and mechanical structures.
In order to help you quickly troubleshoot the problem, I have compiled these common faults into a detailed classification guide:
1. Optical imaging faults:
This is a problem that directly affects the observation effect, usually caused by improper operation or dirty lens.
*The image is blurry or lacks clarity.
*Lens dirt: There are fingerprints, oil stains, or dust on the surface of the objective lens or eyepiece. This is a common reason, especially under high magnification.
*Sample issue: The surface of the metallographic sample is uneven, contaminated, or the cover glass (if any) is placed upside down.
*Objective lens not stuck: The objective lens converter did not rotate to the locked position, resulting in an misaligned optical path.
*Aperture setting error: The aperture stop is too small, resulting in a decrease in resolution, and although the image contrast is large, the details are unclear.
*There are black spots, dust, or dirt in the field of view.
*Judgment method: Rotate the glasses. If the black dot follows the rotation, it indicates that dirt is on the eyepiece; If the black dot disappears after switching the objective lens, it indicates that dirt is on the objective lens; If the black spot does not move, it may be on the protective glass or spotlight.
*Uneven brightness in the field of view (half bright and half dark).
*Reason: The objective lens is not stuck in the light path, or the bulb filament is off center, or the position of the spotlight is too low/not aligned.
*Double vision or binocular fatigue during binocular observation.
*Pupil distance not adjusted properly: The distance between the left and right eyepieces has not been adjusted to match the distance between the observer's pupils.
*Uncorrected diopter: The difference in visual acuity between the left and right eyes has not been compensated for by the diopter adjustment ring on the eyepiece.
2. Lighting and light source faults:
*The light bulb is not working
*Power issue: Loose plug or damaged power cord.
*Fuse blown: Check the fuse tube at the power socket.
*Light bulb burnt out: The lifespan of the light bulb has expired and needs to be replaced.
*The brightness adjustment is ineffective or the brightness is too dim.
*Aperture too small: The field aperture or aperture stop is mistakenly closed too small.
*Lamp aging: The service life of the bulb is coming to an end, and the luminous efficiency is reduced.
*Voltage/line issues: Transformer failure or poor line contact.
3. Mechanical structural faults:
This type of malfunction usually involves the physical moving parts of the microscope.
*The lens barrel automatically slides down (unable to maintain focus).
*Reason: The friction torque of the coarse focusing knob is less than the weight of the lens barrel. Usually it is because the adjustment handwheel is too loose or the internal plastic washer is worn.
*Solution: Hold the stop pulley on the inside of the coarse adjustment handwheel with both hands and tighten it clockwise with force (slight differences in structure among different models).
*Focusing feels too heavy or stuck.
*Reason: The guide rail lacks lubricating oil, the lubricating oil is dry, or the gear and rack mesh is too tight.
*Attention: The structure of the fine-tuning part is precise. If it gets stuck, it is recommended not to forcefully disassemble it. It should be handled by professional personnel.
*The movement of the loading platform is not smooth.
*Reason: There is dust, impurities, or insufficient lubricating oil on the guide rail.
Repair of metallographic measuring microscopeFault Quick Check Table:
For your quick reference, I have compiled the following table:
Possible causes of the malfunction and suggested solutions.
The image is blurry, the lens is dirty, the sample is uneven, the objective lens is not stuck, clean the lens, reposition the sample, and confirm that the objective lens "clicks" in place.
The all black light bulb is burnt out, the aperture is closed, the objective lens is not aligned, replace the bulb, turn on the aperture, and check the position of the objective lens.
The coarse adjustment knob of the tube slide down is too loose, and the washer is worn. Tighten the adjustment wheel on the inside of the coarse adjustment handwheel.
There are errors in setting the distance between the pupils of the double image, adjusting the distance between the eyepieces to coincide with the field of view without adjusting the refractive power, and adjusting the refractive power.
Uneven brightness: The spotlight is not aligned, the filament deviates from the center, the height and center of the spotlight are adjusted, and the center position of the bulb is adjusted.
💡 Special Reminder: Regarding "Repair" and "Maintenance"
Many so-called 'faults' are actually caused by a lack of maintenance. To reduce the occurrence of malfunctions, we suggest that you:
1. Mold and dust prevention: Metallographic microscopes are most afraid of lens mold growth. If not frequently used, be sure to cover it with a dust cover and place a desiccant next to it.
2. Proper cleaning: Do not use regular tissues or clothes to wipe the lens if it is dirty, as this will scratch the coating. Please use a balloon to blow away the dust, then dip a small amount of anhydrous ethanol in a special lens cleaning paper and gently wipe from the center outward in a spiral trajectory.
3. Mechanical lubrication: If the stage or focusing knob is found to be rough, do not apply force forcefully. You can apply a suitable amount of specialized precision instrument lubricant.
If your microscope has internal circuit faults (such as motherboard damage) or severe deviation of the precision optical axis, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or professional maintenance personnel. Do not disassemble it yourself to avoid irreversible damage.
