Flame heat flux measurement provides a total (radiation and conduction) heat flux measurement of combustion gas intensity. Designed to be directly immersed in front of the flame, the thermoelectric conversion signal of this water-cooled tool has been calibrated to comply with ASTM C177-76 (modified).

Sensors can be used to help verify the strength of heat sources in order to comply with fire protection regulations. Another important application is measuring the heat flux in the combustion chamber of power generation equipment. It can also be used for testing flame materials and components under federal aviation regulations. Sensors are small diameter refractory metal rods that can be placed in contact with hot gases. The generated signal is directly proportional to the local total heat flux. The D.C. microvolt (μ V) signal generated by the detector can be measured using a conventional microvoltmeter or recorder.
