With the deepening implementation of the Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law and the Outline of the Ecological Environment Monitoring Plan (2021-2035), the supervision of petroleum pollutants in water bodies is becoming increasingly strict. The traditional infrared oil detection method relies on tetrachloromethane, an ozone depleting substance that has been banned by the Montreal Protocol. In 2018, the National Ecological Environment issued HJ970-2018 "Determination of Water Quality and Petroleum by UV spectrophotometry", which clearly recommended the use of n-hexane instead of tetrachloromethane and stipulated that the absorbance should be measured at 225nm wavelength after extraction under pH ≤ 2 conditions.
