Umbilical vein endothelial cells are derived from the surface of the intima of normal human umbilical vein blood vessels and are distributed in a single-layer flat pattern. This cell plays an important role in synthesizing and secreting cytokines, maintaining the dynamic balance of coagulation and fibrinolysis inside and outside blood vessels. Endothelial cells also release molecules that control cell proliferation and regulate vascular wall tension. These processes can be studied in vitro using cultured cells, and human umbilical vein and arterial endothelial cells are commonly used cell types in such studies.
