Compared to shear flow, most materials exhibit very different reactions in tensile flow. The refinement and fracture of fluid filaments analyzed using CaBER instruments provide valuable information about material properties, which cannot be provided by rotational rheometers!

HAAKECaBER1 Fluid Stretching RheometerOperating principle:

Place a small amount of sample (<1ml) between two circular plates. The upper plate quickly separates from the lower plate at the strain rate set by the user. Therefore, an unstable fluid filament is formed. After the stretching stops, the fluid at the midpoint of the filament is subjected to a tensile strain rate determined by the tensile properties of the fluid. The laser micrometer monitors the variation of the midpoint diameter of a gradually thinning fluid filament over time. The antagonistic effects of surface tension, viscosity, mass conversion, and elasticity can be quantified by corresponding models in the software. Automatic experimental analysis and model comparison provide quick definition of the following parameters: viscosity, surface tension, elasticity, relaxation time, and filament fracture time.
