An accumulator is an energy storage device in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. It converts the energy in the system into compression energy or potential energy at the appropriate time and stores it. When the system needs it, it converts the compression energy or potential energy into hydraulic or pneumatic energy and releases it to replenish the system. When the system experiences an instantaneous increase in pressure, it can absorb this energy. Ensure that the pressure of the entire system is normal.
The types of energy storage devices are mainly divided into spring type and inflatable type.
The function of an accumulator is (1) to supply a large amount of oil in the short term, (2) to maintain system pressure, (3) to provide emergency energy, (4) to alleviate shock pressure, and (5) to absorb pulsating pressure
The functions of an accumulator are mainly divided into four categories: storing energy, absorbing hydraulic shock, eliminating pulsation, and recovering energy.
*Class: Energy Storage. This type of function can be further divided into: ① serving as an auxiliary power source to reduce installed capacity; ② Compensate for leakage; ③ Perform thermal expansion compensation; ④ Be an emergency power source; ⑤ Forming a constant pressure oil source.
The second type: absorbing hydraulic shock. The sudden reversal of the directional valve and the sudden stop of the actuator movement will generate pressure shock in the hydraulic system, causing the system pressure to rise rapidly in a short period of time, resulting in damage to instruments, components, and sealing devices, as well as vibration and noise. To ensure absorption efficiency, the accumulator should be placed near the impact point, so the accumulator is generally installed before the impact source such as the control valve or hydraulic cylinder, which can effectively absorb and buffer hydraulic impacts.
The third category: eliminating pulsation and reducing noise. For hydraulic systems that use plunger pumps and have fewer plungers, periodic changes in pump flow can cause vibration in the system. Installing an accumulator can absorb a large amount of energy from pulsating pressure and flow, within one cycle of flow pulsation. The part of the oil with instantaneous flow rate higher than the average flow rate is absorbed by the accumulator, and the part with flow rate lower than the average flow rate is supplemented by the accumulator. This absorbs the energy in the pulsation, reduces the pulsation, and minimizes the damage to sensitive instruments and equipment.
The fourth category: energy recovery. The use of energy storage devices to recover energy is currently a widely researched field. Energy recovery can improve energy utilization efficiency and is an important way to save energy. Accumulators can be used to recover various functional and positional potentials because they can temporarily store energy.
