The quality control and development of the separator should ideally be carried out under testing conditions that are relevant to the actual conditions. Therefore, the oil separator must be tested at temperatures up to 120 ° C under application conditions, depending on its application field at high temperatures.
As a special feature,HMT 1000 P Oil Mist Heater Modular Testing SystemThe version of the test bench can provide control over the absolute pressure above ± 200 mbar at the entrance of the testing chamber or at the testing filter.
Using the modular testing system HMT 1000 P oil separator (such as separating blow by gas aerosols in combustion engines or for separating oil vapor behind compressors), characterized by speed and accuracy, and most importantly, consistent with actual practice, isothermal testing can be conducted at temperatures up to 120 ° C
• Classification separation efficiency
• Loading time/lifespan
• Total separation efficiency/weight analysis
• Pressure drop
Individual components of the test bench, such as high-resolution heatable light scattering spectrometer Promo ® 1000 H, The heatable dilution system KHG 10 D and the heatable aerosol generator PLG 2100 can be easily removed from HMT 1000 and used for other applications, such as direct measurement on the engine. Over the years, many companies have switched from heating and pressure resistant Palas ® Benefit from the advantages of testing components, which are used for isothermal and isobaric particle size and quantity measurements of oil mist. Palas ® The HMT 1000 filter test bench has been used in the international industry since 2001 and has achieved great success.
The core of HMT 1000 P quality details is the light scattering spectrometer Promo ® 1000 H, It can measure particle size and particle quantity independently of each other, thus also measuring their concentration without affecting each other. Using Promo ® 1000 H, It can measure very quickly, clearly, reproductively, and isothermally (see data sheet Promo) ® 1000 H)。

Figure 1: Promo ® 1000 H
The advantages of optical particle measurement compared to absolute weight analysis measurement are:
The usual quantitative determination of weight analysis is often not fast and sensitive enough, and cannot provide information about particle size distribution. Due to the good correlation between quantity distribution measurement and weight analysis, it can ensure rapid and quality related testing of the oil separator. By using Promo ® The 1000 H system can measure the concentration of clean gas within 1 minute.
Why conduct isothermal measurements?
Depends on changes in engine temperature, particle size, and oil mist concentration. Therefore, the oil separator must be tested at different temperatures, using different particle sizes (up to about 5-8 µ m) and particle concentrations (about 105-107 particles/cm3) as well as different volumetric flow rates, in order to clearly characterize its separation behavior. Due to changes in volumetric flow rate, temperature, filter feeding, etc., the characteristics of the separator may vary, so it must be clearly determined through reliable online or in-situ measurements. To prevent condensation and evaporation effects, the complete aerosol tube of HMT 1000 P (including preparation, sampling, and measurement volume) is heated to up to 120 ° C. This ensures the determination of isothermal fractionation efficiency.
Why is it necessary to adjust ± 200 mbar?
Depending on the structure of the oil separator, overpressure or underpressure may occur at the inlet of the filter. Due to the control of ± 200 mbar at the entrance of the test bench, the separator can be tested under the same conditions as the actual situation.
Isothermal in-situ measurement, such as on an engine.
The testing system HMT 1000 is built to be mobile and modular. Therefore, individual components can also be used for other tests and particle measurements, such as in-situ measurements conducted on engines.

Using Palas ® FTControl software automatically detects measurement data
The software that has been verified through practice can perform almost fully automatic characterization of oil separators. Therefore, the results are independent of the users on the test bench (see data sheet FTControl)
Test bench control:
Automatic control of volumetric flow rate
Automatically turn on the aerosol generator
Automatically switch between measuring points above/below
• Automatic temperature control
Evaluate and register measurement signals such as pressure difference, relative humidity, temperature, volumetric flow rate, absolute pressure, etc.
Automatic measurement process:
• Automatically evaluate pressure loss curve
• Automatic measurement of classification and separation efficiency
Automatically evaluate the pressure loss curve under different loading conditions, including measuring the efficiency of graded separation
