The measurement of dissolved oxygen is based on the well-known Clark battery principle. The oxygen permeable membrane isolates the water sample from the electrode, so there is no need to adjust the water sample.
Other reducing or oxidizing ions do not interfere as they cannot pass through the breathable membrane.
Apply a constant voltage to two electrodes and maintain a constant potential for each electrode. The gold working electrode (cathode) will reduce dissolved oxygen to hydroxide ions:
O2+2H2O+4e--->4OH
The oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of a large silver electrode (anode):
4Ag++4Br--->4AgBr+4e-
The oxidation-reduction reaction generates a diffusion current, which is proportional to the concentration of dissolved oxygen.
Electrochemical reactions and diffusion rates are temperature sensitive. Therefore, the measurement unit is equipped with a temperature sensor that can automatically perform temperature compensation.
