The vapor drawn from the top of the tower is condensed, and a portion of the condensed liquid is returned to the distillation tower as reflux, while the remaining distillate is the product at the top of the tower. The liquid drawn out from the bottom of the tower is partially vaporized by the reboiler, and the vapor rises along the tower. The remaining liquid is used as the bottom product of the tower. The ratio of the amount of liquid refluxed into the tower at the top to the amount of product at the top is called the reflux ratio, which affects the separation efficiency and energy consumption of distillation operations.
