Usage
METHOD OF APPLICATION
Before filling the distillation tower, the tower wall and packing must be cleaned. Usually, it is necessary to first wash with carbon tetrachloride and dichloroethylene, then heat treat with benzene once, rinse with distilled water, and dry before filling. When filling, take a small amount of filling from the top with a cow horn spoon or directly insert it with a glass rod. At this time, the tower should be tilted to avoid damage to the support frame caused by impact when vertically added. Afterwards, add a small amount of small filler multiple times and gently tap the tower body with a wooden rubber mallet while installing to avoid bridging. After filling, continue to vibrate and knock for a period of time until the filling position no longer moves down. A single-layer column can be wrapped with asbestos rope or electric heating wire outside the column body for insulation purposes. Insert a thermometer into the splitter, connect the receiver to the lower part of the side tube, add the required mixed organic compounds for distillation to the distillation flask, and fully wet the inner wall of the tube and the surface area of the filling material. When heating, use an oil bath, water bath, or electric heating jacket. Do not use open flames to directly heat to prevent low boiling point substances from burning during distillation. When the distillation liquid enters the receiving flask, control the reflux ratio according to the requirements. After the experiment is completed, wait for the material to cool down before stopping the cooling water

There are many factors that affect the separation ability, among which the packing material inside the column has a particularly important impact. Within a certain height of the packing layer, the total surface area of the packing is related to the type, specification, material, and filling method of the packing, which affects the thickness of the liquid film, pressure drop, and separation efficiency. It is generally stipulated that the size of the filler should be less than 1/10 of the column diameter, and the ratio of column diameter to filler size should be maintained between 10:1 and 12:1. There are many efficient packing varieties available now, such as stainless steel 0-ring packing and stainless steel triangular spiral packing. The selected packing should be able to maintain an appropriate liquid holding capacity, so that the liquid can wet the packing to ensure sufficient contact between the vapor and liquid for quality exchange. This is related to the specific surface area and wettability of the packing, and the separation efficiency of the packing is commonly expressed in terms of equal plate height.
