Valve, also known as Fan Er, is a mechanical device that controls the flow rate, direction, pressure, temperature, and other parameters of a fluid medium in a pipeline system. Valves and fittings, like pumps, are often discussed as a separate category in terms of technology. Gas switches and faucets are common valves, while other commonly used ones include butterfly valves, ball valves, gate valves, pressure reducing valves, globe valves, drain valves, safety valves, needle valves, check valves, filters, solenoid valves, diaphragm valves, exhaust valves, flow meters, sanitary valves, and so on.
Valves can be operated manually or by hand wheels, handles, or pedals, and can also be controlled to change the pressure, temperature, and flow rate of fluid media. Valves can perform continuous or repetitive operations on these changes, such as safety valves installed in hot water systems or steam boilers.
In more complex control systems, automatic control valves are used based on the needs of external inputs (i.e. adjusting the constantly changing set points through the pipeline). Automatic control valves do not require manual operation, and based on their inputs and settings, enable the valve to accurately control various requirements of the fluid medium.
Two thousand years ago, bamboo pipes and wooden plug valves were used on water pipelines, water gates were used on irrigation channels, plate check valves were used on wind boxes for smelting, and bamboo pipes and plate check valves were used for extracting saltwater in well salt mining. With the development of smelting technology and hydraulic machinery, copper and lead plug valves have emerged in Europe. Subsequently, with the use of boilers, lever heavy hammer safety valves appeared again in 1681. Before the emergence of the Watt steam engine in 1769, plug valves and check valves were always the most important valves. The invention of the steam engine brought valves into the field of mechanical industry. In addition to using plug valves, safety valves, and check valves, butterfly valves were also used on Watt's steam engines to regulate flow. With the increase of steam flow and pressure, the use of plug valves to control the inlet and outlet of steam engines can no longer meet the needs, so slide valves have emerged.
Around 1840, globe valves with threaded valve stems and wedge gate valves with trapezoidal threaded valve stems emerged successively, which was a major breakthrough in the development of valves. The emergence of these two types of valves not only met the increasing pressure and temperature requirements of various industries at that time, but also initially met the requirements for flow regulation. Subsequently, with the development of the power industry, petroleum industry, chemical industry, and shipbuilding industry, various high and medium pressure valves have rapidly developed.
After World War II, due to the development of composite materials, lubricants, stainless steel, and cobalt based hard alloys, ancient plug valves and butterfly valves gained new applications, while ball valves and diaphragm valves developed rapidly. The variety and quality of globe valves, gate valves, and other valves have increased. The valve manufacturing industry has gradually become an important sector of the machinery industry.
