441 stainless steel rod(S44100/1.4509/022Cr18NbTi) belongs to stabilized ferritic stainless steel, and its corrosion resistance can be summarized in one sentence:
Better than regular 430, less prone to rusting after welding, but far inferior to 304 and even inferior to 316L.
1. Overall corrosion resistance level
Matrix chromium content: 17.5-19.5% Cr
Roughly ranking of corrosion resistance:
316L > 304 > 441 > 430 > 409
2. Specific manifestations
Atmospheric, fresh water at room temperature, and slightly humid environment
Good rust resistance, not easy to rust, more stable than 430.
Corrosion resistance after welding (441 major advantages)
Ordinary 430 welding is prone to rust and intergranular corrosion at the weld seam.
441 has added Nb+Ti dual stabilization, and its resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding is significantly better than 430, which is its most core advantage.
Acid alkali, salt spray, and seawater environment
Acid resistance: significantly weaker than 304
Salt spray and chloride ion resistance: Generally, long-term use in coastal and salt containing environments can easily cause pitting corrosion
Seawater and strong corrosive conditions: not recommended
High temperature oxidation/flue gas corrosion
It has good resistance to high temperature oxidation and automobile exhaust corrosion, which are its strengths.
3. Applicable vs Not Applicable Scenarios
441 stainless steel rodSuitable for use
Automotive exhaust system components, exhaust pipes, flanges
High temperature equipment brackets and heat-resistant structural components
General indoor and outdoor decoration, structural components with mild corrosion
Ferritic components that require welding but do not want the weld to rust
Not suitable for use
Chemical strong acid and strong alkali media
Long term exposure to seawater and salt spray
Food hygiene grade, high requirement anti-corrosion equipment (priority 304/316)
4. Brief summary
If you are heat-resistant, welded, and generally rust resistant: 441 is very suitable and cost-effective.
If you insist on anti-corrosion, acid and alkali resistance, and use by the sea: directly apply 304 or 316L, 441 cannot withstand it.
