I. Overview
R&S ® NGU source measurement unit (SMU) has high accuracy and fast load recovery time, suitable for applications under high demand conditions, such as:
-Battery and power consumption testing
-Power supply for wireless devices
-Simulate voltage drop
The special ammeter design enables it to accurately measure the current consumption from nanoampere to ampere simultaneously, without the need for multiple measurements. With the help of the fast recovery function, the instrument can cope with rapid load changes that occur when mobile communication devices switch from sleep mode to transmit mode. The high-speed data acquisition function supports detecting every detail with a resolution of 2 μ s. R&S ® The NGU source measurement unit adopts a dual quadrant or four quadrant architecture, which can be used as both the source and absorption ends.

(5)The online product configuration program is intuitive and price transparent to use
3、 Characteristics
(1)Dual/Four Quadrant: Used as the source and absorption ends
Simulate batteries or loads
With the help of a dual/four quadrant architecture, the source measurement unit can be used as both the source and absorption terminals to simulate batteries or loads. Once the external application voltage exceeds the set nominal voltage, the SMU will automatically switch from source mode to absorption mode. With the help of the four quadrant architecture, R&S ® NGU401 can provide positive and negative voltage or current, and can be used as a positive and negative source or sink terminal.

R&S ® The Four Quadrant Architecture of NGU401
R&S ® NGU provides positive and negative voltages in either source or absorption mode.
(2) High speed data acquisition
FastLog function
R&S ® The NGU source measurement unit has FastLog function, which can collect voltage and current measurement results. The result data can be stored in an external USB storage device or transferred to an external computer via USB or LAN. The collection rate is up to 500 ksample/s, supporting the collection of voltage and current results every 2 μ s.

FastLog high-speed data acquisition
The FastLog function can collect voltage/current changes with a resolution of up to 2 μ s.
(3) Voltage priority and current priority modes
Optimize voltage/current regulation
In voltage priority mode, fast voltage regulation can achieve a fast recovery time of less than 30 μ s. The current regulation speed is designed to be slow to avoid oscillation. If precise and rapid adjustment of current is required, R&S ® The NGU source measurement unit can adopt current priority mode. This mode is optimized for fast current regulation (load recovery time less than 50 μ s) and can perform tasks such as LED testing that are also sensitive to short current spikes.

Voltage/current priority mode
When there is a risk of current overshoot, the standard mode can provide fast voltage regulation function. The special mode provides fast and safe current regulation function.
(4) High capacitance mode
Compensation capacitor
In a typical measurement configuration, the input terminal of the device under test usually has a capacitor. Connecting the power supply through leads can cause low pass behavior between the leads and capacitors. In high capacitance mode, R&S ® The NGU source measurement unit can compensate for capacitance and directly display the current of the tested device.
(5) Fast load regulation
Coping with rapid load changes
Consumer electronic devices such as tablets and IoT devices have low power consumption in sleep mode. However, once these devices switch to transmit mode, the current will suddenly increase. The power supply used for these tested devices must be able to handle load changes from nanoamps to amperes without generating voltage drops or overshoot.

Optimize load recovery time
When dealing with load changes, the power supply usually experiences overshoot and has a longer recovery time. R&S ® The recovery time of the NGU source measurement unit is less than 30 μ s.
