Calibration and maintenance of spectroscopic ellipsometer
Date: 2025-11-24Read: 1

Spectral ellipsometer is a high-precision surface optical detection instrument widely used in fields such as thin film, material characterization, and surface analysis. It obtains the optical constants of the sample, such as refractive index and absorption coefficient, by measuring the polarization state changes of reflected light. With the continuous use of instruments, the performance of ellipsometers may be affected by different factors, so regular calibration and maintenance are crucial.

There are various calibration methods for spectroscopic ellipsometers, and the specific calibration method depends on the equipment model and manufacturer requirements. Here are several common calibration methods:
1. Light source calibration
The light source used may decay over time, so it is necessary to regularly check the performance of the light source. Most ellipsometers provide light source intensity calibration function, and standard reflective samples (such as metal reflective standards) are usually used during calibration to ensure that the light source intensity is stable within the set wavelength range.
2. Instrument angle calibration
The working principle of an ellipsometer is to extract optical information by measuring the polarization change between the incident angle of the beam and the reflected light from the sample. Therefore, the accuracy of the incident angle is crucial. Users need to regularly check if there is any deviation in the incident angle, especially after equipment relocation or prolonged use. The common calibration method is to use a standard sample with a known reflection angle and calibrate the angle through instrument software.
3. Detector calibration
The calibration of the detector is mainly to ensure that the reflected light signal can be correctly received and processed. The performance of the detector may change due to aging of the sensor or environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. Regularly checking and calibrating the linear response, noise level, and other parameters of the detector is crucial for ensuring the long-term stability of the instrument.
4. Calibration of standard samples
Standard samples are generally materials with known optical constants, such as silicon wafers, metal reflective standards, or glass sheets. The purpose of these standard samples is to assist users in calibrating key parameters such as reflectivity and phase change of the instrument by comparing them with known data. During the calibration process, users need to measure the reflected light of the standard sample, compare the measured data with known optical constants, adjust the instrument settings, and ensure that the measured values are consistent with the standard values.
Spectral ellipsometer is a precision instrument, and good daily maintenance can greatly extend its service life and maintain its high-precision measurement performance. Here are some common maintenance suggestions:
1. Keep it clean
Optical components such as mirrors, lenses, optical fibers, etc. are easily covered by dust, oil, or other pollutants, resulting in loss of optical signals. Users should regularly inspect and clean these optical components. When cleaning, specialized dust-free paper, air blowing or ultrasonic cleaning equipment can be used to avoid damaging the lenses and lenses.
2. Prevent environmental pollution
The instrument has high requirements for the environment, especially factors such as temperature, humidity, and vibration that can directly affect the measurement results. To ensure the stability of the instrument, users should place the ellipsometer in an environment with suitable temperature and humidity, and try to avoid placing it in places with high temperature or heavy humidity. When necessary, air conditioning, humidifiers, or temperature control devices can be used to maintain stable environmental conditions.
3. Regularly inspect hardware components
Regularly inspect hardware components, including light sources, mirrors, detectors, mechanical parts, etc., to ensure their normal operation. Check the brightness of the light source, confirm that the detector is not contaminated or damaged, and inspect the optical path for any damage. For mechanical components, regular lubrication is necessary to ensure stable connections between each component.
4. Calibration and software updates
In addition to hardware checks, software also needs to be updated regularly. Many manufacturers regularly release new software versions to improve functionality or fix known bugs. Timely installation of these updates can improve the performance of the instrument and ensure its compatibility with modern operating systems. Calibration data also needs to be retained in the software for easy tracking and updating.
As a high-precision analytical instrument, the stability and accuracy of the performance of the spectroscopic ellipsometer are key to ensuring the success of experiments. Through regular calibration and scientific maintenance, the service life of equipment can be extended, the failure rate can be reduced, and the reliability of experimental results can be ensured. Users should keep an eye on their devices in daily use, promptly identify and solve problems.
