How to use a film thickness tester for accurate measurement of film thickness
Date: 2025-12-12Read: 1

A film thickness tester is a precision instrument used to measure the thickness of coatings or thin films, widely used in industries such as electronics, automotive, aviation, and materials science. The thickness of the film layer has a significant impact on the performance, durability, appearance, and other aspects of the product, making it an important equipment in the production process. Proper use can not only improve measurement accuracy, but also ensure product quality.

Steps for using the film thickness tester:
1. Preparation work
Check the instrument: Ensure that the instrument is in good working condition. Check if the battery has sufficient charge to ensure that the probe, display screen, buttons, and other components are functioning properly.
Clean the surface to be measured: Before measurement, ensure that the surface of the object to be measured is clean and free of impurities such as oil and dust, as these contaminants may affect the measurement results.
Choose the appropriate mode: Select the appropriate testing mode (such as eddy current mode, magnetic mode, etc.) based on the type of coating and material being tested.
2. Select the measurement location
Uniform measurement: Ensure multiple measurements are taken at different locations to ensure accuracy and representativeness of the test. For large-area coatings, it is recommended to measure them separately to avoid local errors.
Select standard location: In some cases, you may need to choose a measurement location for testing based on product specifications or customer requirements.
3. Conduct film thickness measurement
Magnetic film thickness tester: Place the probe steadily on the surface of the coating, and the instrument will automatically calculate the thickness of the film layer and display it on the screen.
Eddy current film thickness tester: Similarly, the probe is placed on the surface being tested, and the instrument calculates the thickness of the film layer by measuring the changes in eddy current.
Ultrasonic film thickness tester: The probe is in contact with the surface of the substrate and coating, and the film thickness is calculated by emitting ultrasonic waves and receiving reflected waves.
Optical film thickness tester: Aim the tester at the surface of the coating, and calculate the thickness of the film layer by analyzing the interference phenomenon of reflected light.
4. Record test data
The measurement results are usually displayed on the screen of the tester. You can manually record the data of each measurement, or use the storage function of the instrument to save the data. For precise testing, it is recommended to take multiple measurements and take the average.
5. Analyze data
Data processing: Some testers are equipped with data processing software that can perform statistical analysis on multiple measurements, such as calculating the average value, magnitude value, etc.
Judging the quality of the film layer: Based on the measurement results, determine whether the quality of the coating meets the requirements. If the film thickness is uneven or below the standard value, it may be necessary to reprocess or adjust the process.
Precautions for film thickness tester:
1. Keep the instrument clean
The probe and sensor parts of the instrument should be kept clean to avoid dust or oil contamination affecting the measurement results. Regularly clean the instrument and wipe it with a specialized cleaning cloth.
2. Avoid excessive measurement pressure
When conducting film thickness testing, do not apply excessive pressure to the instrument to avoid damaging the probe or causing measurement errors. Gently place the instrument.
3. The influence of temperature and humidity
The testing accuracy may be affected by temperature and humidity. During use, ensure that the temperature and humidity are within an appropriate range to avoid measurement errors caused by environmental changes.
4. Calibration before testing
Before starting the formal measurement, instrument calibration should be performed. Calibration is a prerequisite for ensuring accurate measurement. Generally speaking, manufacturers will provide standard calibration tools, and users should regularly calibrate according to the instructions.
5. Storage and processing of data
When storing and processing measurement data, attention should be paid to the integrity and security of the data. For important measurement data, it should be backed up to prevent loss.
The film thickness tester is a very important tool in the industrial manufacturing process, which can accurately measure the thickness of coatings or films, ensuring product quality and performance. Mastering the correct operating steps and paying attention to the elimination of common problems can effectively improve testing accuracy and work efficiency. During use, regular instrument calibration and maintenance are carried out to ensure that the equipment is always in ideal working condition, thereby guaranteeing the accuracy of test results.
