As a high-precision core equipment in electrochemical research, the performance stability of the rotating ring disk electrode directly affects the reliability of experimental data. Scientific maintenance can significantly extend equipment life and ensure experimental accuracy. The following elaborates on specific maintenance points from four aspects: daily maintenance, key component maintenance, regular calibration and performance verification, and long-term shutdown management:
1、 Daily maintenance: basic cleaning and status check
1. Electrode tip cleaning: Immediately remove the electrode tip after each experiment, rinse the surface with clean water for residual electrolyte or sample particles, and avoid the adhesion of crystals; If organic systems (such as oils and fats) are involved, they can be soaked and cleaned in anhydrous ethanol. Metal tweezers are prohibited from scratching sensitive surfaces such as glassy carbon/platinum to prevent physical damage.
2. Care of shaft and connector: Dip a dust-free cloth in isopropanol and gently wipe the electrode shaft and motor interface to remove salt spray or dust; Check whether the O-ring is aging and cracking. If it is deformed, it should be replaced in a timely manner to prevent liquid from seeping into the interior of the motor.
3. Motor heat dissipation management: After the experiment is completed, turn off the power and let the motor cool naturally to room temperature before storing it; Regularly clean the filter of the cooling fan to prevent dust blockage from affecting the cooling efficiency.
2、 Special maintenance of key components
1. Surface treatment of working electrode
-Glass carbon electrode: After long-term use, scratches or passivation may appear on the surface. It is necessary to manually polish it to the mirror surface with 1 μ m and 0.3 μ m alumina polishing powder slurry, then clean it with ultrapure water ultrasonic for 5 minutes, and dry it with nitrogen gas for later use.
-Precious metal electrode (platinum/iridium): If oxidation spots appear, electrochemical reduction method can be used for repair (such as cyclic voltammetry scanning in dilute sulfuric acid solution to a stable state).
2. Ring disk gap calibration: Observe whether the gap between the ring electrode and the disk electrode is uniform (standard spacing of about 0.1-0.2mm) through an optical microscope. Excessive deviation can lead to abnormal collection efficiency; Use a specialized wrench to fine tune the ring electrode bracket during adjustment and conduct insulation testing again.
3. Sealing test: Conduct a monthly water tightness test - immerse the electrode in water, introduce low-pressure argon gas (0.1MPa), and maintain it for 10 minutes without any bubbles overflowing, which is considered qualified. Otherwise, replace the sealing gasket.
3、 Regular calibration and performance verification
1. Speed accuracy verification: Use a digital tachometer to compare the displayed values of the instrument, and the error should be<± 1%; If using a DC motor drive, it is necessary to check whether the output of the stabilized power supply is stable.
2. Electrochemical performance calibration: Perform cyclic voltammetry testing in a standard solution ([Fe (CN) ₆] ³ ⁻/⁴⁻), and the peak current ratio should be close to the theoretical value (about 1.0) to verify the normality of the synergistic effect between the diffusion layer thickness and the ring disk.
3. Background current test: Scan the CV curve in blank electrolyte, and the background current density should be below 1 × 10 ⁻⁶ A · cm ⁻ ². Abnormal increase indicates electrode contamination or excessive shaft vibration.
4、 Long term suspension management
1. Deep cleaning and drying: Disassemble all removable components (except for the motor), degrease them with acetone steam, and dry them in a 60 ℃ oven for 48 hours to avoid moisture residue causing rust.
2. Anti oxidation protection: Apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the metal contacts and cover the electrode head with a silicone protective cap; Store the device in a dryer (humidity<30%), away from acidic volatile gases.
3. Preparation before restart: When resuming use, it is necessary to perform at least 3 blank scans first, and then conduct formal experiments after the baseline is stable to avoid initial impurity interference.
5、 Precautions
-It is strictly prohibited to plug and unplug electrode cables while they are live to prevent surge currents from damaging the potentiostat module;
-Avoid prolonged immersion of electrodes in strong acid/alkali solutions (pH>12 or pH<2), and in special cases, corrosion-resistant coated electrodes should be used;
-Establish a maintenance log to record the time and operator of each cleaning, calibration, and replacement of consumables, in order to trace the cause of the malfunction.
