Common faults and solutions of thin film resistance tester
Date: 2025-09-10Read: 0
Thin film resistance tester is the core equipment for precision measurement of material resistivity, but it is susceptible to various malfunctions due to environmental, operational, or hardware losses during long-term use. The following provides systematic solutions for four common problems: display abnormalities, testing errors, functional failures, and connection failures.
1、 Display screen abnormality: no display/garbled text/flashing
Typical manifestations: The screen does not light up, characters overlap or flash frequently after booting up.
Possible reasons: unstable power supply, poor motherboard contact, system firmware disorder.
resolvent:
1. Check the power input: Confirm that the adapter voltage matches and the interface is not loose, try replacing the same specification power cord; If using battery power, check if the battery level is sufficient.
2. Restart and Reset: Press and hold the power button to forcefully shut down, let it stand for 30 seconds, and then restart; Some devices need to enter factory reset mode through hidden button combinations.
3. Check the motherboard connection: Remove the shell, check if the motherboard cable has fallen off due to vibration, re plug and fix the screws; If capacitor bulges or burn marks are found, the same type of component should be replaced.
4. Update firmware: Visit the manufacturer to download the latest firmware file and upgrade the program through the USB interface to avoid display abnormalities caused by compatibility issues with older systems.
2、 Large deviation in test results: data jumps/poor repeatability
Typical manifestation: The difference in multiple measurements of the same sample exceeds the allowable range, or deviates significantly from the theoretical value.
Possible reasons: probe contamination, signal interference, calibration failure.
resolvent:
1. Clean the measurement module: Use an anhydrous ethanol cotton swab to wipe the probe head and the surface of the test bench to remove oxides or dust residues; If it is a four probe structure, all electrodes need to be cleaned synchronously.
2. Shielding electromagnetic interference: Keep away from strong electromagnetic sources such as frequency converters and motors, and if necessary, wrap the testing area with a metal shielding cover; Check if the grounding wire is reliable, and the grounding resistance should be less than 1 Ω.
3. Recalibrate the equipment: Use a standard calibration sheet (such as a graphite film with known square resistance) for full range calibration, and perform three steps of open circuit reset, short circuit calibration, and load calibration in sequence to ensure that the instrument linearity meets the standard.
4. Optimize test parameters: Adjust the test current level according to the characteristics of the sample (such as using microampere current for thin insulation layers), and set a reasonable integration time to filter high-frequency noise.
3、 Function button malfunction: touch unresponsive/mechanical lag
Typical manifestation: Local areas of the touch screen are invalid, and there is no feedback after pressing physical buttons.
Possible reasons: Touch driver board malfunction, button spring fatigue, internal dust accumulation obstructing movement.
resolvent:
1. Clean the touch screen: Spray a small amount of specialized touch screen cleaner and gently wipe it in the same direction with a soft cloth; If it is a resistive touch screen, the pressing force can be slightly increased for testing.
2. Disassemble and inspect the buttons: Spray electronic and electrical cleaning agent on the physical buttons, and press them repeatedly to dissolve the internal oil stains; If the spring elasticity decreases, it is necessary to replace it with a micro spring of the same specification.
3. Replace touch module: If the touch driver IC is damaged, contact the supplier to replace the compatible module to avoid self modification that may cause communication protocol mismatch.
4、 Poor contact of test fixture: high impedance/open circuit alarm
Typical manifestation: The contact resistance between the fixture and the sample is too high, resulting in test interruption or data overflow.
Possible reasons: wear of fixture coating, imbalance of pressure regulation, and displacement of sample placement.
resolvent:
1. Polish the probe contact: lightly polish the surface of the tungsten steel probe with metallographic sandpaper to restore its flatness; If the gold plating layer peels off, it needs to be returned to the factory for re electroplating.
2. Adjust the clamping force: Rotate the screw on the side of the fixture clockwise to increase the downward pressure until you hear a "click" sound indicating that it is in place, to avoid excessive compression and damage to the sample.
3. Align the testing area: Use a microscope to assist in positioning and ensure that the probe is vertically aligned with the effective area of the sample, leaving a margin of ≥ 2mm at the edge to prevent leakage.
5、 Preventive maintenance recommendations
1. Regular maintenance: Clean the dust inside the equipment every month and check the tightness of the wiring terminals every quarter.
2. Standardized operation: It is strictly prohibited to plug and unplug probes with power on. Preheat the equipment for 15 minutes before testing to stabilize thermal drift.
3. Archive records: Establish a fault log to record the time, reason, and replacement part model of each repair, for easy traceability and analysis.
Through targeted troubleshooting and maintenance, the stability and measurement accuracy of the thin film resistance tester can be significantly improved, and the service life of the equipment can be extended. If encountering complex faults, it is recommended to contact the original factory engineer for remote guidance or return to the factory for repair in a timely manner.
