Instructions for using polarizing microscope
Date: 2025-11-27Read: 2
polarizing microscopeIt is a microscope used to study transparent and opaque anisotropic materials, which identifies the optical properties of substances by converting ordinary light into polarized light.
  polarizing microscopeUsage method:
Calibrate the eyepiece and reticle: Insert the eyepiece mount into the lens barrel, differentiate it into a crosshair, and use it to locate the sample.
Polarizer correction:
Determine the vibration direction of the polarizer: Observe the biotite slice with the polarizer and rotate the workbench until the cleavage gap of the biotite is parallel to the vibration direction of the polarizer. At this point, the absorption is strong and appears dark brown.
Adjust the polarizer to be parallel to the eyepiece reticle: align the cleavage slit of the biotite with the crosshair of the eyepiece, and align the reticle at zero or 180 degrees.
Orthogonal polarization state adjustment: Intersection the vibration direction of the upper polarizer and the lower polarizer, push the upper polarizer, and adjust to the darkest field of view.
Adjust the objective lens: By observing the slice, find the small black dot and place it at the center of the crosshair of the eyepiece. If the small black dot is not in the center, perform a circular operation to align the optical axis of the objective lens with the center of the rotating table.
Observation and recording:
Low magnification observation: First use a low magnification objective lens to find the object image, and then switch to a high magnification lens to observe details.
Use of cone lens: When observing with a high magnification mirror, advance the cone lens into the optical path, adjust the aperture size, and observe the interferogram.
Color filter application: Add a blue color filter as needed to achieve uniform brightness.
Sample preparation: Select transparent or semi transparent samples, cut, polish, and dye them to ensure a smooth surface for easy observation.
