Instructions for using an open flash point tester
Date: 2025-12-19Read: 0

The open flash point tester is used to determine the open flash point of liquid fuels, lubricants, and other substances. The usage method is as follows:

1、 Power on preparation

Instrument placement: Place the instrument on a level and stable tabletop, ensuring good ventilation and keeping it away from open flames to ensure safe operation.

Power connection: Plug in the power and ground it, turn on the main power switch to supply power to the instrument.

Component inspection:

Check if the power supply, temperature control system, ignition source device (such as electric spark igniter), mixer and other components are working properly.

Clean sample containers, probes, and other components to ensure that there are no residues interfering with the test and to avoid affecting the accuracy of the test results.

2、 Sample preparation

Sample selection: Select the liquid sample to be tested, ensuring that the sample is not contaminated and is a uniform liquid with a volume that meets the instrument requirements (usually several milliliters to tens of milliliters).

Sample annotation:

Inject the sample into the test cup to the mark position. The scale lines of samples in different temperature ranges may be different, for example, samples below 210 ℃ are marked on the upper scale line, and samples above 210 ℃ are marked on the lower scale line.

When adding samples, pay attention to controlling the amount of liquid to avoid the liquid level being too high or too low.

3、 Parameter settings

Initial temperature: usually set to room temperature, but can also be adjusted according to actual needs.

Heating rate: Set to a stable heating rate, such as 5 ℃/min, to ensure stable vapor formation.

Ignition interval: set to conduct ignition attempts every certain temperature (such as 1 ℃).

Pre set flash point:

Enter the approximate flash point temperature of the sample. If the flash point temperature of the oil sample is unknown, a critical value can be set and then set from low temperature to high temperature.

The preset flash point value should be lower than the actual flash point value by a certain range (for example, when the flash point value is 200 ℃, the preset flash point value should be set to be 10 ℃ lower than the flash point value, which is 190 ℃).

Execution standard: Select applicable testing standards (such as national standard methods) to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.

Atmospheric pressure correction: Set according to the actual atmospheric pressure value to correct to the accurate value under standard atmospheric pressure. Different atmospheric pressure values can result in different closed flash point values of the test samples, so it is necessary to make corrections based on the actual atmospheric pressure values.

Other parameters: Depending on the instrument model and testing requirements, additional parameters may need to be set, such as test type (only measuring flash point or simultaneously detecting flash point), printer operating status, etc.

4、 Test operation

Place the test cup: Place the sample filled test cup in the middle of the heating furnace, keeping it in center contact to ensure even heating.

Install probe: Insert the temperature probe into the sample to ensure sufficient contact between the probe and the sample for real-time monitoring of temperature changes.

Start test: Press the [Start] button, and the instrument will automatically heat up and stir the sample.

Auto ignition: When approaching the expected flash point temperature range, the instrument will automatically ignite and periodically release a source of ignition (such as an electric spark) onto the surface of the sample to detect if the vapor can ignite.

Flash fire judgment: The system automatically recognizes the phenomenon of flash fire. Whenever the sample vapor reaches the flash point, the fire source will ignite the vapor and record the temperature at that time.

Result display and saving:

The flash point result will be automatically output on the display screen, and some models support printing or USB export.

If conducting a flash point test, after detecting the flash point, the equipment will automatically save and record the flash point data, and then continue the heating test. When the sample continues to burn, the flash point value will be immediately saved and displayed, and the flash point and ignition point measurement results will be printed out together.

5、 Test completion and cleaning

Turn off the instrument: After the measurement is completed, turn off the heating system and fire source, and wait for the instrument to cool down.

Cleaning samples and instruments:

Take out the test cup, clean it with solvent and air dry it to prevent sample residue from affecting the next test.

Check for carbon buildup on the electrode tip, clean it promptly, and ensure stable instrument performance.

Turn off power: After ensuring that all operations and parameters have been saved, turn off the instrument power.
