What are the core characteristics of the four tank planetary ball mill?
Date: 2025-10-20Read: 1
Four tank planetary ball millIt is a high-energy grinding equipment designed based on the principles of planetary revolution and rotation, widely used in laboratory and industrial fields for material crushing, mixing, and homogenization treatment. Its core design lies in symmetrically arranging four independent grinding tanks on the same turntable, achieving efficient grinding through composite motion, and possessing multitasking capabilities and nanometer level precision.
Its working principle: When the equipment is running, the turntable drives four grinding tanks to revolve around the central axis, while each tank rotates in the opposite direction around its own axis, forming a speed ratio of 1:2 to 1:2.33. This planetary motion causes the grinding ball inside the tank to spiral and move at high speed under centrifugal force, exerting triple forces of impact, shear, and friction on the material.
Four tank planetary ball millCore features:
1. High efficiency and high energy output
Planetary motion principle: The ball mill jar is installed on a rotating sun gear (turntable). During work, the sun wheel drives the ball mill tanks to revolve, while each ball mill tank rotates in the opposite direction around its own axis.
Centrifugal force superposition: This composite motion subjects the grinding ball and material to strong centrifugal force, causing the grinding ball to be thrown up and collide with the tank wall and material at high speed, resulting in severe impact, shear, and friction.
Result: The sample can be ground to the micrometer or even nanometer level (sub micrometer) in a short period of time, and the grinding efficiency is much higher than that of ordinary drum ball mills.
2. Four tank independent design - high efficiency and comparability
Batch processing capability: capable of processing four samples simultaneously, significantly improving experimental throughput, especially suitable for studies that require a large number of parallel experiments or comparisons of different parameters.
Comparative experimental advantages:
Four different experimental conditions can be run simultaneously on the same machine, such as:
Different grinding times (by batch extraction).
Different ball to material ratios (mass ratio of grinding balls to materials).
Different grinding ball materials or sizes.
Different material formulas or ingredients.
Due to all tanks running on the same turntable, the core grinding parameters such as speed and acceleration are consistent, ensuring the fairness of experimental conditions and comparability of results, greatly reducing system errors.
3. Accurate and controllable grinding parameters
Stepless speed regulation: The spindle speed can be continuously adjusted over a wide range (usually up to several hundred RPM), allowing for precise control of grinding intensity.
Digital timer: It can preset the grinding time and automatically stop when the time is up, ensuring the repeatability of the experiment.
Forward and reverse function: Some models support program settings for alternating forward and reverse operation, which helps prevent materials from "clumping" or sticking in the tank, making grinding more uniform.
Safety interlock: When the lid is not properly locked, the machine cannot start, ensuring safe operation.
4. Diversified selection of grinding tanks and grinding balls
Multiple materials: Provide ball milling jars and balls of different materials to adapt to different samples and avoid contamination:
Tungsten carbide: high hardness, wear-resistant, suitable for hard materials, but may introduce W/C elements.
Stainless Steel: Strong versatility, low cost, suitable for most conventional samples.
Agate/Quartz: It has good chemical inertness and does not introduce metal ions. It is suitable for samples that are sensitive to metal contamination, such as geology, ceramics, and electronic materials.
Zirconia (ZrO ₂): With high hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, and insulation, it is an ideal choice for fields such as biology, medicine, and lithium battery materials.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon: used for soft samples or in situations where any hard contamination needs to be avoided, they can be wet ground.
Multiple specifications: The ball milling jar has various capacities (commonly 50ml, 100ml, 250ml, 500ml), and the diameter of the grinding balls is available in different sizes (such as 1mm, 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, 20mm). Users can freely combine according to the properties of the sample and the target particle size.
5. Flexible operation, suitable for multiple grinding methods
Dry grinding: Directly pulverize solid samples.
Wet grinding: Adding an appropriate amount of liquid (such as water, ethanol, hexane, etc.) as a dispersing medium helps to cool down, prevent oxidation, prevent agglomeration, and obtain finer particle size.
Inert atmosphere protection: Some ball milling tanks are designed with gas nozzles that can be evacuated and filled with inert gases (such as Ar, N ₂) for grinding materials that are prone to oxidation, flammable, or require reaction in specific atmospheres (such as mechanical alloying to prepare amorphous alloys).
6. Sturdy structure and stable operation
Adopting high-strength cast iron or steel structure body, effectively absorbing vibration and ensuring long-term stability during operation.
The motor has sufficient power and can operate smoothly even under high loads.
Compact design and relatively reasonable space occupation.
