Precautions for using low-temperature planetary ball mill
Date: 2025-09-24Read: 2
Low temperature planetary ball millBy combining low-temperature environment with high-energy ball milling technology, special requirements such as nanoscale material preparation, brittle material crushing, and low-temperature reaction control can be achieved. To ensure the safe operation of the equipment, extend its service life, and achieve ideal experimental results, strict control is required from four dimensions: pre operation preparation, operation process monitoring, shutdown maintenance, and safety protection. The following are specific precautions:
1、 Preparation before operation: Ensure that the equipment is compatible with the environment
Environmental condition inspection
Temperature control: Low temperature ball milling should be carried out under the normal operation of the equipment's low-temperature cooling system (such as liquid nitrogen or compressor refrigeration) to ensure that the tank temperature drops to the target value (such as -196 ℃ adjustable to room temperature). If the environmental humidity is greater than 60%, it is necessary to strengthen dehumidification to prevent condensation from causing short circuits in the circuit.
Space requirement: Reserve at least 50cm of heat dissipation and operation space around the equipment, avoiding close proximity to heat sources (such as ovens, direct sunlight) or strong electromagnetic interference sources (such as large motors).
Equipment status confirmation
Cooling system: Check the liquid level of the liquid nitrogen tank (if liquid nitrogen cooling is used) or the pressure of the compressor to ensure that the cooling medium is sufficient and there is no leakage. For example, when the liquid level in the liquid nitrogen tank is below 20%, it needs to be replenished in a timely manner, otherwise it may cause the temperature of the tank to rise and affect the ball milling effect.
Transmission components: manually rotate the turntable to confirm that there is no jamming or abnormal noise; Check the tightness of the belt. If it is too loose, adjust the tensioner to prevent slipping and unstable speed.
Tank body and grinding ball: Select the tank body (such as stainless steel, zirconia, polytetrafluoroethylene) and grinding ball (such as steel ball, ceramic ball, Manau ball) that match the material properties. For example, when crushing highly corrosive materials, it is necessary to use polytetrafluoroethylene tanks to avoid metal contamination.
Sample pretreatment
Particle size control: The sample is initially crushed to particles of ≤ 5mm to avoid large pieces of material causing the tank to be overloaded or the grinding ball to be damaged.
Low temperature adaptability: If the sample is prone to brittleness or phase transformation at low temperatures, a low-temperature pretreatment test should be conducted in advance to determine the optimal ball milling temperature and time parameters.
2、 Running process monitoring: real-time adjustment of parameters and status
Parameter Setting Specification
Speed and time: Set the speed (usually 200-800rpm) and ball milling time (1-72 hours) according to the material hardness. For example, hard alloys require high-speed (600-800rpm) ball milling for a short period of time (1-4 hours), while soft polymers require low-speed (200-400rpm) ball milling for a long period of time (24-72 hours) to avoid overheating and melting.
Forward and reverse rotation switching: Switch the rotation direction every 30-60 minutes of operation (if supported by the equipment) to prevent material deposition from causing eccentric vibration of the tank body.
Temperature and pressure management
Low temperature maintenance: Continuous cooling is provided through the cooling system to ensure that the temperature fluctuation of the tank body is ≤ ± 5 ℃. If liquid nitrogen cooling is used, the consumption rate of liquid nitrogen should be monitored to avoid temperature rise due to insufficient cooling supply.
Vacuum/inflation control: If inert gas protection (such as argon) is required, first evacuate to ≤ 10Pa and then inject gas to the target pressure (such as 0.1MPa) to prevent oxidation reaction.
Abnormal state response
Vibration and noise: If the vibration amplitude of the equipment exceeds 5mm or sharp noise occurs, immediately stop the machine and check whether the tank is loaded with balance, whether the grinding ball is stuck, or whether the transmission components are damaged.
Temperature alarm: When the temperature of the tank exceeds the set value ± 10 ℃, an alarm will be triggered and the machine will automatically shut down. It is necessary to investigate cooling system faults or sample exothermic reactions.
3、 Shutdown and maintenance: extending equipment lifespan
Shutdown operation process
Natural cooling: After the ball milling is completed, first turn off the cooling system and wait for the temperature of the tank to rise to room temperature (to avoid cracking caused by cold shrinkage) before opening the tank cover to take out the sample.
Cleaning the tank: Use a soft bristled brush or alcohol swab to wipe the inner wall of the tank and remove residual materials; If liquid nitrogen cooling is used, the tank must be thoroughly dried to prevent freezing.
Regular maintenance plan
Lubrication and maintenance: Apply low-temperature lubricating grease (such as molybdenum disulfide grease) to the main shaft bearings, gearbox and other transmission components every 3 months to ensure normal lubrication below -50 ℃.
Seal replacement: Check the tank sealing ring and vacuum valve sealing gasket for aging and cracking every 6 months, and replace them in a timely manner to prevent leakage.
Cooling system maintenance: If using a compressor for cooling, clean the condenser fins annually; If liquid nitrogen cooling is used, regularly check whether the valve of the liquid nitrogen tank leaks.
4Low temperature planetary ball millSecurity protection: Avoiding operational risks
Personal protective equipment
Wear anti freezing gloves (such as liquid nitrogen protective gloves), goggles, and lab coats during operation to prevent low-temperature frostbite or damage from grinding ball splashes.
Low temperature operation specifications
When filling the liquid nitrogen tank, it should be poured slowly to avoid rapid gasification and liquid nitrogen splashing; Use specialized tools when taking and placing the tank to prevent direct contact with the skin.
Emergency Response Plan
Immediately evacuate personnel and ventilate in case of liquid nitrogen leakage, and prohibit open flames; When the equipment malfunctions, cut off the power and contact professional maintenance personnel. Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from disassembling.
Case support: A university laboratory failed to check the liquid level of the liquid nitrogen tank, causing the temperature to rise to -50 ℃ during the ball milling process, resulting in a phase transition of the sample; In another laboratory, the operator suffered frostbite on their hands while adding liquid nitrogen due to not wearing anti freezing gloves and had to rest for 2 weeks.
