The working principle and application scope of Vickers hardness tester
Date: 2025-11-04Read: 0
Vickers hardness tester is a commonly used instrument for measuring the hardness of materials, widely used for hardness testing of different materials such as metals, alloys, ceramics, coatings, and glass. Its measurement principle and application scope have important practical significance, which can provide important basis for material selection, quality control, and performance analysis.
1、 Working principle
Vickers hardness testerThe basic principle of measuring hardness by using a diamond pyramid indenter to press into the surface of the tested material with a certain force is to reflect the hardness of the material through the size of the indentation. During the testing process, the shape of the indenter is a square pyramid. The applied force causes the indenter to create a measurable diagonal indentation on the surface of the material. Calculate the hardness value using the formula by measuring the length of the diagonal of the indentation.
The testing process is relatively simple. Firstly, select the testing location and gently place the indenter on the surface of the material, applying an appropriate load. Then, the diagonal length of the indentation is accurately measured using a microscope. Finally, calculate the hardness value.
2、 Application scope
The Vickers hardness tester has been widely used due to its accuracy and applicability in measuring results. The following are its main application areas:
1. Hardness testing of metal materials: widely used for hardness testing of metal materials such as steel, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, stainless steel, etc. Due to its suitability for smaller samples and thin pieces, it is particularly suitable for hardness testing on metal surfaces or small areas.

2. Coating and film hardness testing: For coating or film materials, accurate hardness data can be provided. Due to the thin thickness of the coating, traditional Brinell or Rockwell hardness testing is difficult to apply, but it can effectively measure thin layer materials.
3. Hardness testing of small samples: capable of conducting hardness testing on small areas, suitable for precision manufacturing and small sample testing. For example, hardness testing of mechanical components, tool materials, or small metal components.
4. Ceramic material testing: It can also effectively test the hardness of ceramic materials. Ceramic hardness testing usually requires small indentation, and due to its small indentation size, it is very suitable for testing such materials.
5. Chemical reaction research: In the field of chemistry, it is possible to test the hardness changes of materials under different chemical reactions or corrosive environments, providing data support for the analysis of material corrosion resistance and durability.
6. Hardness testing of electronic components: With the improvement of miniaturization and precision, many electronic components such as chips and sensors also require hardness testing. It can also effectively measure these small components accurately.
Vickers hardness tester has been widely used in multiple industries due to its high accuracy, wide applicability, and easy operation, especially for small materials, films, and coatings that require precise measurement. With the advancement of technology and the continuous improvement of hardness testing standards, it will continue to play an important role in fields such as materials science, mechanical engineering, and electronic technology.
