Troubleshooting and Solutions for pH Electrode Malfunctions: Common Problems and Solutions
Date: 2025-10-27Read: 1
In fields such as water quality analysis, biopharmaceuticals, and chemical production, pH electrodes serve as key measurement tools, and their accuracy directly affects process control and product quality. However, due to long-term exposure to corrosive media, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical wear, electrodes are prone to various malfunctions. This article will sort out the common pain points of the system, from slow response to data anomalies, and provide practical and feasible solutions to assist technicians in efficiently maintaining equipment operation.
Glass bubble rupture is caused bypH electrodeThe primary reason for measurement inaccuracy. When the reading is found to be unstable or deviates from the expected value, the first thing to check is whether the sensitive membrane is intact. At this point, it is necessary to replace the new electrode and adjust the calibration parameters. If only the outer protective cover is damaged, special glue can be used for temporary repair, but it must be ensured that the sealing after repair meets the IP67 protection level requirements.
Drying up the reference solution can cause slope shift issues. After opening the feeding hole to inject fresh electrolyte, it is necessary to soak the gel to make it fully permeated. Note that there are strict regulations on the filling solution formula for different types of electrodes - for silver chloride systems, saturated KCl solution should be used, while for calomel systems, a specific concentration of NaCl solution should be prepared. It is recommended to check the liquid storage volume once a month and replenish it in a timely manner to avoid bubbles in the cavity interfering with the measurement.
Pollution and scaling are the main factors affecting response speed. Protein precipitation can be cleaned by circulating gastric protease solution; Non ionic surfactants should be used for ultrasonic treatment of oily pollutants; Metal hydroxide deposition is suitable for rapid flushing with dilute hydrochloric acid. For stubborn attachments, gently wipe them with a soft bristled brush before chemical treatment to avoid scratching the surface of the glass film.
Loose wiring terminals can cause signal interruption or noise interference. Use a torque wrench to tighten the aviation plug screws to the specified force, ensuring that the contact resistance is less than the specified value. The detachment of the shielding layer may lead to increased electromagnetic interference. In this case, the grounding wire should be re welded and insulation protection should be taken. Regularly check whether the bending radius of the cable meets the requirement of a smaller curvature to prevent excessive twisting that may cause core wire breakage.
Abnormal temperature compensation often occurs under high-temperature sterilization conditions. The drift of the built-in thermistor can lead to an increase in conversion error. Standard buffer solution can be used for comparison and correction at different temperature points. If there is a sudden jump phenomenon, it is necessary to check whether the heater power exceeds the standard and causes local overheating deformation.
Calibration failure is usually caused by a combination of multiple factors. When performing two-point calibration, pH 4.01 and pH 7.00 standard substances should be selected to ensure coverage of the actual measurement range. When non-linear response occurs in the automation system, manual single point calibration can be attempted to gradually troubleshoot the fault source.
Improper storage accelerates the aging process. When not in use for a short period of time, it should be hung vertically on a dedicated bracket to avoid horizontal placement causing the diaphragm to sink and deform. Before long-term storage, clean and replace with fresh electrolyte, seal with nitrogen, and place in a drying oven.
From glass film integrity to electrolyte activity, from physical cleaning to electrical signal transmission, the stable operation of pH electrodes requires technical support. Only by establishing standardized operating procedures and cultivating professional operation and maintenance teams can the detection value of equipment be truly realized. When every electrode is carefully cared for, it will become a reliable sentinel for production process control, rather than just a detection tool. This reliability centered operation and maintenance concept is driving the management of analytical instruments towards intelligence.
