Background: In order to implement the Environmental Protection Law of the People's Republic of China, fulfill China's commitment to stop the use of carbon tetrachloride (CTC) for laboratory purposes under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 2019, protect the ecological environment, safeguard human health, and meet the monitoring requirements for petroleum in current environmental quality standards and pollutant emission standards, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment approved two water quality petroleum standards as national environmental protection standards on October 10, 2018. Among them, the "Determination of Water Quality Petroleum by UV spectrophotometry (Trial)" (HJ 970-2018) is applicable to the determination of petroleum in surface water, groundwater, and seawater.
