Overview

Underwater low-frequency sound source "refers to a device or natural phenomenon that generates sound waves in water. Due to the strong absorption of electromagnetic waves (such as radio waves and light waves) by water, and the relatively small attenuation of sound wave propagation, sound waves are an effective means of underwater information transmission, detection, and communication. Underwater sound sources have wide applications in fields such as marine engineering, military, scientific research, fisheries, and environmental monitoring.

1Underwater low-frequency sound sourceClassification of

According to the working principle:

  • Mechanical sound sources, such as airgun, spark discharge sound sources, Boomers, etc., are commonly used in marine seismic exploration.

  • Piezoelectric/magnetostrictive transducer: It uses piezoelectric or magnetostrictive materials to convert electrical signals into sound waves and is widely used in sonar systems.

  • Natural sound sources: such as whale calls, waves, underwater volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.

2. Underwater low-frequency sound sourceDivided by frequency range:

  • Low frequency sound source (<1 kHz): used for long-distance detection (such as submarine communication, seismic exploration).

  • Intermediate frequency sound source (1-10 kHz): commonly used in active sonar.

  • High frequency sound source (>10 kHz): used for high-resolution imaging, fish swarm detection, underwater robot navigation, etc.

3. Classified by purpose:

  • Active sonar sound source: emits sound waves and receives echoes to detect targets.

  • Communication sound source: used for information transmission between underwater devices.

  • Sound source for depth/terrain surveying: such as the transmitting array in a multibeam depth measurement system.

  • Research sound source: used for studying the acoustic characteristics of the ocean, bioacoustics, etc.

2、 Key technical parameters

  • Source Level (SL): measures the intensity of a sound source, measured in dB re 1 μ Pa @ 1 m.

  • Directionality: The directional characteristic of sound waves radiated by a sound source.

  • Bandwidth and pulse form: affect resolution and anti-interference ability.

  • Working depth and pressure resistance: determine the applicable water depth environment.

  • Power consumption and volume are particularly important for platforms such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

4、 Challenges and Development Trends

  • Environmental impact: High intensity sound sources may interfere with marine mammals and must comply with environmental regulations (such as NOAA guidelines).

  • Multipath and reverberation: The complexity of underwater channels limits communication and detection performance.

  • Miniaturization and Intelligence: Developing Efficient Sound Sources for Micro Underwater Robots.

  • Broadband and low-frequency technology: improving resolution and operating range.

  • Green sound source: Developing eco-friendly low interference sound sources.
