Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is a 14-15 kDa glycoprotein with immunomodulatory functions in various cell types. IL-15 can be expressed in various cell types, stored as an intracellular protein in the cytoplasm or transported to the cell surface, but can only be secreted from certain cell types, including monocytes, dendritic cells, epithelial cells, bone marrow stromal cells, and fibroblasts. As a multifunctional cytokine, IL-15 plays a mediating role between innate immunity and adaptive immunity, primarily by killing virus-infected cells. IL-15 plays a crucial role in the development, differentiation, and survival of NK cells. In monocytes, IL-15 can induce the production of IL-8 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), thereby recruiting neutrophils and monocytes to the site of infection. IL-15 can also serve as a chemotactic inducer for T lymphocytes and regulate their differentiation.
