A respirator is a device used to detect activated sludge in wastewater biochemical treatment systems, mainly used to monitor the status of activated sludge in sewage treatment facilities, the operation of reactors, and process control. It determines the oxidation capacity and biomass in the biochemical wastewater treatment process by measuring the absorption of oxygen by activated sludge, and is therefore also known as the "sludge oxidation capacity detector".


The working principle of the activated sludge aerator is to mix the activated sludge sample with water containing a certain concentration of oxygen under certain temperature and stirring conditions, and then measure the amount of oxygen consumed over a certain period of time to determine the oxidation capacity of the activated sludge.


According to different measurement principles and display methods, activated sludge respirators can be divided into different types, such as portable and desktop, digital and analog, etc. Generally speaking, portable activated sludge respirators have the characteristics of small size, light weight, and easy operation, making them suitable for on-site use; Desktop activated sludge respirators typically have higher accuracy and more functional options, which can be used for laboratory measurement and analysis.

The three operating modes of RSA PF-8000 respiratory apparatus in the United States:

1. Aerobic mode:

Supply pure oxygen - small increments of pure oxygen are injected into each container of the respirator in response to the reduction of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This operating mode ensures stable oxygen concentration at the top of the reaction vessel, and oxygen is converted from the gas phase to the liquid phase by stirring with a magnetic stirrer.


2. Hypoxia or anaerobic mode:

The gas generated by the biological reaction flows into the internal storage chamber and is released after the pressure is detected by the built-in pressure sensor. This incremental RSA undergoes precise calibration before leaving the factory.

Number of reaction containers: 4, 8, 16, and 24 positions are optional. The 4-bit system can be expanded to 8 positions by adding an internal expansion module, and the 8-bit system can be expanded to 16 or 24 positions by adding a satellite flow control module. All units are connected to the same computer for data collection.


3. Operation mode:

All standard pulse respirators can operate in aerobic and anaerobic modes without the need to purchase any isolation control modules or other cumbersome hardware. Depending on requirements, a separate aerobic or anaerobic system can be provided.


The activated sludge aerator has important application value in the wastewater treatment process. By monitoring and controlling the state and evolution process of activated sludge, it can better ensure the treatment effect and operational stability of wastewater. Meanwhile, activated sludge breathers can also be used to study and evaluate the efficiency and feasibility of different wastewater treatment processes.



Number of reaction containers: 4, 8, 16, and 24 bit options are available. Reaction vessel: Unless for some special projects, RSA's pulse breathing apparatus uses standard glassware and most chemical companies can provide standard consumables. The standard reaction vessel is 500ml, and depending on the testing purpose, the reaction vessel can be selected from 250ml to 2L.


Sensitivity: The oxygen consumption increment is 0.05mg, and the maximum oxygen consumption rate of the standard system configuration is 1200mg/hr. By adding a simple plug-in flow expansion module, the rate can increase tenfold. Such a high rate can be used to detect experimental samples with high oxygen consumption.


Operating characteristics: - minimum oxygen uptake=0.03 mg; maximum oxygen uptake rate>1200 mg/hr (can be expanded to 12000 mg/hr or greater)

-Minimum gas flow rate=0.04 mL; maximum gas flow rate>1000 mL/hr (expandable to 10 L/hr)

-Working temperature: 5 to 70oC

-Sensitivity:<0.03 mg (aerobic),<0.04 mL (anaerobic) - Accuracy:<3% CV aerobic and anaerobic
