The measurement of moisture in natural gas is one of the most difficult tasks in the natural gas industry process. Natural gas sources are generally high-pressure, unclean, and corrosive, containing high molecular weight components. Removing moisture is a crucial industrial process before natural gas enters pipelines. The efficiency of the moisture removal process is also crucial for the supplier to fulfill their sales contract obligations responsibly, ensure the good performance and safe transportation of natural gas.
The presence of water vapor at a concentration of 1 ppm per million molecules implies serious and adverse consequences. The lifespan of a pipeline is closely related to the corrosion rate of the fluid inside the pipeline, and the corrosion rate is directly related to the moisture content in the gas that exacerbates oxidation. In addition, the formation of hydroxides can reduce the flow capacity of pipelines and even cause pipeline blockage. When excessive water vapor and liquid combine, hydroxides are produced, which can damage filtration systems, valves, and compressors in industrial processes. During the transmission process, it will condense from the gas into an emulsion, and then form a solid block under pressure conditions. In addition, due to the temperature changes in the main pipeline caused by climate change, low-temperature separators are often used in industrial processes before gas transportation to separate high molecular weight compounds and avoid condensation of these high molecular weight hydrocarbon liquids. The dehumidification dew point of natural gas is lower than the operating temperature of the cooling plant, which is important to prevent flow restrictions caused by freezing issues from affecting the efficiency of the plant.

Sour natural gas

At present, many natural gas oil fields encounter such difficulties in the production process. When it is necessary to convert the measurement of water dew point to the unit of moisture content, such as humidity, if the gas compounds contain a significant amount of carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide, then measuring the water dew point of natural gas becomes an additional challenge. Recently, many oil fields have encountered such "acidic" natural gas. At the same temperature, the humidity required to achieve saturated water vapor pressure in H2S and CO2 will be significantly higher than that in methane or "sweet" gas desulfurization gas compounds. Ignoring the measurement principle, the water dew point measured in sour gas (sulfur-containing natural gas) will be significantly lower than that of "sweet" gas with the same moisture content, namely desulfurized gas. This also requires professional knowledge in the condensation of natural gas components.
In the typical case of sour gas produced by major natural gas producers in northern Germany, the maximum allowable moisture content is set at 50mg H2O/m3 (equivalent to a dew point of -12oC for sweet natural gas at a pipeline pressure of 7MPa, but lower than the dew point of -20oC for natural gas with extremely high sulfur content). This limit is established due to safety standards and enforced by Bergamt (the German federal regulatory agency) to control severe corrosion issues caused by acid gas. The concentration of H2S in natural gas obtained from such sulfur-containing oil fields is generally 9 to 15% (mol), and in some extreme cases can be as high as 33% (mol). In the initial processing of sulfurization production operation, natural gas production, including desulfurization plants, is an important part. Treating the gas in this way before desulfurization means that the design of industrial process plants and humidity analyzers must be considered very comprehensively and thoughtfully. It is evident that corrosion issues are closely related to the characteristics of H2S, which can promote the cracking of sulfide stress on metal materials and potentially lead to fatal consequences of H2S gas leakage. However, the human sense of smell cannot detect H2S gas with a concentration higher than 200 ppm, which is highly toxic to the human nervous system. The application of acid gas measurement requires humidity analyzers to work in highly corrosive gas media. Ceramic humidity sensors have a successful application history of many years in such working environments. The active part of the sensor is made of specialized ceramic materials, and the bottom metal is a naturally inert material that provides good resilience to chemical erosion. The sturdy structural design and carefully selected material combination for the sensor's air wet section enable the sensor to provide reliable service in such working environments.

Unlike traditional alumina technology, the ceramic substrate of ceramic alumina sensors has unique resistance to pressure impact, which can fully cope with instantaneous pressure changes during operation or shutdown, avoiding sensor fracture and damage. At the same time, the internal characteristics of the sensor enable it to resist corrosive substances in the gas for a long time. The circuit with a microprocessor inside the sensor stores calibration data and provides a stable 4-20mA output, corresponding to a dynamic dew point (ppmv) range. Ceramic alumina sensors can sense changes in the partial pressure of water vapor in gases, which is directly related to the dew point temperature. At the same time, its unique inertness allows it to withstand the effects of many chemicals for a long time, even in very acidic gases containing a certain percentage concentration (30% H2S). Every ProEA IS sensor is validated in the world's top laboratories at Micir using a benchmark dew point measurement system, internationally recognized and directly traceable to NPL (UK) and NIST (US) standards.

Designed for use in medium to high pressure environments, it can also be used to measure atmospheric dew point by changing the position of the measuring probe.
When measuring acid gas, all sampling pipelines are made of dedicated 36/316L (EN 1.4401/1.4404) stainless steel material that complies with the latest version of NACE MR0175
In all systems, the moisture content and dew point temperature are measured under pipe pressure conditions, thus avoiding any impact caused by depressurization condensation.

The outdoor installation type uses a stainless steel cabinet with a fixed temperature point heater to ensure that the analyzer operates at a constant ambient temperature.
