ProElut C18 has a wide range of retention for non-polar, weakly polar, and moderately polar compounds, and is currently the most widely used adsorbent in solid-phase extraction. Due to the long-chain effect of C18 chains, the polarity of the filler is smaller than other adsorption phases, so C18 fillers do not retain any salt. Usually, C18 packed columns can be used to desalinate some small and medium-sized molecule samples. In addition, in ion analysis, an aqueous solution containing the target ion can be passed through a C18 column, and weakly polar interferents (such as fats, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates) in the solution can be retained by the adsorbent to obtain a pure ion solution.

The difference between ProElut C18 and ProElut C18-U is whether the end group is capped. ProElut C18 has a capped end group, while ProElut C18-U has no capped end group. The difference between the two is explained by extracting morphine from aqueous solution. The recovery rate of ProElut C18 column is 40%, while the recovery rate of ProElut C18-U is 80%. The reason is that after the bonding and sealing steps of C18 fillers, there is very little residual hydroxyl group on the surface of silica gel, and the interaction force between the fillers and morphine molecules is only weak non-polar van der Waals force, which can be destroyed by 10% methanol. However, the C18-U filler has not undergone tail sealing, and a large amount of residual hydroxyl groups form relatively stable hydrogen bonding forces with morphine molecules, requiring the use of 70% methanol for elution. Therefore, ProElut C18-U has a better extraction effect on alkaline compounds.
