The High Voltage Power Monitor (HVPM) is Monsoon's latest power measurement instrument. Can replace its predecessor FTA22D, the high-voltage power monitor supports a main channel output voltage range of 0.8V to 13.5V and up to 6A continuous current. This expands the range of devices supported by high-voltage power monitors, from mobile devices to laptops, tablets, automotive devices, prototype electronic products, mobile phones, smartwatches, and other IoT devices. In addition to the main channel, it also supports up to 5.5V external input through USB and auxiliary channels. HVPM is still a device that combines power and current measurement, providing convenient 2-in-1 functionality and fully automatic support for any programming needs.
PowerTool software and Power Monitor hardware provide * power measurement solutions for mobile devices. PowerTool software and Power Monitor hardware can analyze the power consumption of devices. Electrical engineers and software developers can use PowerTool software and Power Monitor hardware to optimize designs and analyze the performance of their mobile devices.
The high-voltage power monitor has been certified by UL, FCC, and CE. It is suitable for devices that require one to three lithium-ion batteries for power supply.
Each instrument comes with a custom designed power supply, 2 crocodile clips, 3 USB cables, and an information card that includes links to software downloads and support documentation.

Hardware and software requirements for developing workstations

It is necessary to use a dedicated Windows platform workstation with a power monitor to achieve optimal performance and results. Slow/older computers may not be able to process samples efficiently enough, and users may see a large number of discarded samples.

ξ Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 [XP support stops after 4.0.4.11].

Screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher.

3.2 GHz 32-bit (x86) processor.

ξ 4 GB system memory.

A 40GB hard drive with at least 15GB of available space.

ξ Full speed USB 2.0? Integrated chipset or PCI/PCI Express add-on card.

ξ It is recommended to use USB 3.0 or downstream charging port for front panel connection.

USB hubs (including monitor hubs) should not be used with power monitors for optimal performance.

Install PowerTool software, drivers, and connect to the power monitor hardware

Before installing the latest version, please uninstall any previous versions of the power monitor software from the Control Panel.

Create a new temporary folder (C: \ \) in the root directory of the development workstation.

Copy PowerTool.rip to the development workstation.

Extract the contents of PowerTool 5. X.X.zip to a temporary folder.

Run PowerTool Install.exe and follow the on-screen prompts to install the PowerTool software.

After installing the PowerTool application, this is the first time the workstation will run the PowerTool application. You need to install two drivers, the Power Monitor driver and the firmware driver.

As explained below:

1. Turn on the power monitor in normal mode? The green LED should light up.

2. Under "Device Manager", find "Mobile Device Power Monitor" and there will be a yellow exclamation mark.

3. Right click and select Update Driver Software?

4. Choose to browse the computer to find driver software.

5. Browse to C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Monsoon Solutions Inc\\PowerMonitor\\Drivers\\PC, Then click Next.

After the driver installation is complete, click "Close".

7. Under the Device Manager? Universal Serial Bus devices, please ensure that the mobile device power monitor is properly enumerated.

Firmware driver installation instructions

1. Turn on the power monitor in output enable mode by simultaneously pressing the output enable button and power button? The amber indicator light should be on.

2. Find "Unknown Devices" under "Device Manager", right-click and select "Update Driver Software?

3. Choose to browse the computer to find driver software.

4. Browse to C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Monsoon Solutions Inc\\PowerMonitor\\Drivers\\Firmware, Then click Next.

After the driver installation is complete, click "Close".

6. Under "Device Manager"? Customize USB devices to verify if Microchip's custom USB devices have been properly enumerated.

update firmware

The power monitor comes with the latest firmware and does not require updates in most cases. If for any reason it is necessary to update the firmware, please use the following instructions.

Simultaneously press the output enable button and power button to turn on the power monitor in output/enable mode. The amber indicator light should be on.

Click the 'Load' button, then browse to the PMFlash folder where the PowerTool application is located, and select the PM_ RevX_ProtXXVerXX_Soot.fwm file. (Please note that X is a placeholder for the correct version information of the given fwm file, such as PM_ RevD_Prot18_Ver21. fwm). The Reflash utility is also compatible with the deprecated. hex file format used in previous firmware versions.

Click the 'Write' button

Wait until the status is displayed? Completed writing?.

After completion, click the X in the upper right corner of the window to exit.

Turn off the power and then turn on the power monitor again so that you now have a green light.

Connect to the power monitor hardware

1. Ensure to carefully read all instructions before operation. Using the power monitor without following the manual may damage the equipment and compromise the protection designed for user safety.

2. Be sure that the power switch in front of the power monitor hardware is not engaged. Hardware should not be powered on.

3. The power switch should be in the outward position, not the inward position.

4. Connect the accompanying 16 VDC/7.5 Amp power supply to the back of the power monitor and a wall mounted power supply (100-240V, 47-63 Hz, maximum 1.6A) that meets the input requirements of the device

For safety reasons, the position of the power supply should be within reach. Ensure this by placing the power module on the same workbench as the power monitor, with the AC input facing the user. Ensure that there are no obstacles in the work area that may hinder you in emergency situations.

On a development workstation compatible with full speed USB 2.0, connect the USB cable to the USB connector on the back of the power monitor hardware, and connect the other end of the USB cable to the development workstation. Do not connect to external USB hub devices.

Connect the power monitor to the device

For information on how to properly configure the device battery to connect to the power monitor, please refer to the appendix.

Always wear safety goggles that comply with ANSI Z87.1 standard when using exposed battery terminals and wiring.

Note that there is always a risk of damaging the device or causing it to overheat, smoke, or catch fire when connecting the power meter hardware to devices with lithium batteries. Although this is unlikely, one must be extra careful. It is recommended to work on fire-resistant surfaces and prepare firefighting equipment when performing battery bypass and connecting the power monitor to the tested device. Immediately disconnect the equipment that has exceeded the safe temperature.
