In the process of reverse osmosis water treatment, SDI value is one of the important indicators for determining the inlet water of the reverse osmosis system; It is the main means of verifying whether the effluent from the pre-treatment system meets the requirements for reverse osmosis inlet water. Its size is crucial for the operational lifespan of reverse osmosis systems. The lower the SDI value, the smaller the tendency for water to contaminate and block the reverse osmosis membrane, and the longer the membrane's cleaning and usage cycle. Considering both economy and efficiency, most reverse osmosis manufacturers recommend that the SDI value of the reverse osmosis inlet water should not exceed 5.
3. SDI measurement method
The measurement of SDI values is based on the ASTM (American Standard for Testing Material) 4189-95 standard, which is the standard measurement method in the industry. Under a certain pressure (30psi, equivalent to 2.1kg/cm) and standard time intervals (usually 5min, 10min, 15min), a certain volume of test water sample (usually 150ml, 500ml) passes through a microporous filtration membrane with a pore size of 0.45um and a diameter of Φ 47mm to determine the blockage rate.
