The simple name for a microscope is a magnifying glass. According to the principle of magnification, it can be divided into optical microscopes and electron microscopes. Simply put, an optical microscope is an optical system that uses a set of lenses or a combination of multiple lenses to achieve magnification. The basic unit of a primitive microscope is an optical lens, and the magnification and resolution achieved by an optical microscope vary depending on the number and processing quality of the optical lenses. With the advancement of left processing technology in the later stage, the precision of lens and microscope structure processing has become increasingly high, resulting in larger magnification and higher resolution of microscopes. By changing the optical path, microscopes with different functions have been derived, such as biological microscopes, metallographic microscopes, stereomicroscopes, polarizing microscopes, 3D microscopes, etc. Microscopes have expanded bright field, dark field, polarization, and differential interference based on different optical paths and auxiliary techniques. The extension from observation plane to super depth of field, and then to 3D scanning microscope and laser confocal microscope. Electron microscopy is another technological foundation. Microscopes focus images clearly and magnify them through optical lenses, while electron microscopes focus electron beams through electron lenses and accelerate electrons through the voltage difference between the anode and cathode. The focused electrons bombard the surface of the sample. Unlike optical microscopes, electron microscopes have a flexible focus point that can be adjusted. Electron microscopes can be divided into transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes. Transmission electron microscopy requires the sample to be very thin, so that the electrons emitted by the electron microscope can smoothly penetrate the sample, thereby collecting the information of the electrons that have penetrated and processing them to obtain an image. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) is a technique that uses emitted electrons to bombard the surface of a sample, generating secondary electrons on the surface. The information from the secondary electrons is then detected by a detector and processed by a computer to obtain an image. So scanning electron microscopes do not require the preparation of thin samples. Electron microscopes can also be combined with energy spectrometers to analyze the metal composition in the surrounding area of the sample.
